MEDIA ADVISORY: 100 Organizations Demand Title IX Enforcement
March 31, 2017
New York, NY - One hundred organizations (including GLSEN, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and Know Your IX) have sent a letter to the Trump administration demanding the federal government enforce Title IX.
The letter — which focuses on the needs of undocumented students, trans students, and students of color — was drafted with the input of 50 student organizations from over a dozen states.
“The letter is important because it calls for a strengthening of the current protections that the Office for Civil Rights guidelines have already set out, in terms of due process; OCR enforcement; mental health and academic accommodations; and protections for LGBT students, undocumented students, and students of color,” said Brandee Blocker Anderson, an organizer with No Red Tape Columbia.
Donna Lent, President of the National Women’s Political Caucus, agreed: “Sexual assault and gender-based violence is rampant on college campuses across the country. Title IX is one of the cornerstones of the fight against this national epidemic.”
The demand letter is being released on a national day of action in support of Title IX on March 31. During the day of action, students at eighteen schools are holding rallies in support of gender-based violence survivors and Title IX enforcement.
The day of action and demand letter come on the heels of the Trump administration reversing Title IX guidance for trans students, law enforcement officials detaining multiple undocumented college students, and a survivor filing a Title IX lawsuit against Columbia University.
For more information on the campaign or information on related events in your area, please feel free to contact No Red Tape Columbia at the information listed above."
