🌎Benedetta Gobbo, originally from Padova, Italy, has been studying law for five years. In Italy, legal education is entirely textbook-based, requiring students to memorize vast amounts of material.
Coming to the U.S. for her final year has been an eye-opening experience, introducing her to a more practical and case-driven approach to the law.
Her passion for law began at NHSMUN, where she first considered a legal career. At one point, she was drawn to diplomacy, but over time, her studies exposed her to different legal fields.
Intellectual property law particularly caught her interest, and she's now exploring it through her coursework and research.
Choosing the University of Cincinnati felt like a full-circle moment. When she was deciding where to study in Italy, her university introduced UC's LLM program as one of its standout international opportunities. She loved the idea of experiencing the common law system, and after years of studying U.S. legal concepts from afar, she's finally here, living it.
One of the things she appreciates most about UC is the opportunity to take classes alongside JD students. It pushes her to engage at the same level as native English speakers, and sees in this an opportunity for growth.
She also has loved the opportunity of practical experience. This semester, she's completing a judicial externship at the Federal Court under the supervision of a judge while also dedicating time to an independent research project in intellectual property law.
Adjusting to the U.S. legal system hasn't been easy. In Italy, students don't use the Socratic method, and legal principles are found mostly in codes rather than case law. The fast paced workload and class discussions were a big shift, but over time she has adapted amazingly. She has now learned how to brief cases and engage in legal analysis from a common law perspective.
Looking ahead, she’s excited about the possibility of working for a year in the U.S. before returning to Italy to complete her legal studies. From there, she will decide how to best use everything she’s learned.

Benny has a bright future ahead of her!

Law is about more than just reading statutes—it’s about understanding how legal systems shape, and are shaped by, the people and cultures they serve. This week, our LLM students gave us a glimpse into the diverse legal traditions of their home countries, including Italy, France, Belarus, Uzbekistan, India, and Colombia.

Through these presentations, we learned about the unique challenges, innovations, and perspectives that make each legal system different.

Moments like these remind us that legal education isn’t just in the books; it’s in the connections we make and the ideas we share. 🤝

🌟 We had an incredible conference/open talk with Natia Mezvrishvili, a distinguished University of Cincinnati College of Law LLM graduate, who shared her inspiring journey and insights with our LLM and JD students, professors, and faculty for our LAWYERS CHANGE THE WORLD event. 🌟

Natia discussed the ongoing efforts to uphold democracy in Georgia, including the upcoming October elections. She emphasized the vital role of younger generations and international observation in safeguarding democratic values.

Natia also highlighted the importance of perseverance in making positive change. Her experience with U.S. laws has been instrumental in driving reforms in her country, ensuring that human rights are universally recognized and that every individual is treated with dignity.

Thank you to everyone who attended and engaged in this crucial conversation. Let’s keep the conversation open to learning and working towards changing the world through advocacy. 🌍💬
