Now by no means am I saying this is the end of the work. Just that we typically jump right into fixing it, solving it, trying to be rational, and that typically isn’t where the kid is at when their rational brain in offline.

So stop a beat. Regulate yourself. Give yourself a minute to make sure your rational brain is online, before you jump into action.

To take it a step further, Dr. Bruce Perry has the 3 R’s. It essentially says that when our kid is in the reptilian (bottom part) of the brain, we regulate. When they are in the limbic system (middle part), we relate. And when the cortex is online and rational thinking can occur, we reason. So in those big moments, remember: regulate, relate, reason.

So again. It doesn’t mean that we aren’t talking at all throughout the entire process. What I’m saying is take a beat. Regulate yourself. Bring your rational brain online, and then figure out where to go from there. Chances are, you’ll be most successful with regulation or relating, and then once your child is in a more regulated space, that can be the time to come back to reasoning.

*adding the caveat here that sometimes we don’t have the luxury of taking a beat. Sometimes there is a safety concern and we have to jump right into action.

If you’d like to learn more about how to support your kid through a meltdown, what’s happening inside of them (and us) in those moments, and whatever else pops into my mind when creating reels 😂, please give me a follow!
