Time With a Hero is an organization started by 4 middle school students to ease the loneliness felt by our senior Veteran community on a daily basis.

This is Parker's Grandpa Leo. Papa Leo was in the Pacific during WWII as a tail gunner in a B17. Papa Leo is in an Alzheimer home in Phoenix now but still loves it when he gets visitors. Please go visit your loved ones as much as you can while they are still with you. It means everything to them!

Today’s is John Verton. John served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1946 during World War II as a gunner. He fought in the Battle of the Coral Sea, Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific campaign medal with one Silver and three Bronze Stars as well as the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star.
This Thursday, May 7, is the 73rd anniversary of the sinking of USS Sims (DD-409) during the Battle of the Coral Sea. John was the 13th and final survivor of the USS Sims out of 250 men.
After John left the service he worked on tug boats for the City of New York until he retired in 1984. John passed away in 1994. We honor his service.

Today's is William Boyd. Bill entered the U.S. Navy in 1953 during the Korean War. After electronics school, he was assigned to overhaul and repair at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida and crewed several types of airplanes on test flights. He was then assigned to Barbers Point, Hawaii, VR-21 and flew as a crewman to all of the islands in the Pacific, carrying passengers and supplies.
Bill left the service in 1957 but later reenlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He continued flying and worked in electronic shops maintaining aircraft and training reservists at Jacksonville NAS, Florida, Floyd Bennett Field, New York and NAS Atlanta, Georgia until retiring in 1977.

Thank you for your service Jim Rinck! Be sure to visit lonely Senior Veterans at your local VA home.
Today's is Jim Rinck of the U.S. Army. Jim served one tour in Vietnam on the DMZ with 8th Battalion 4th Artillery also known as "Guns of the DMZ." He was a Sergeant E-5 and gun chief.
Jim said, "lots of memories, some scary, others of all the fun we could find in the middle of the war on the DMZ. My unit lost 28 men in the 4 years we were there. I miss all those guys! WE WERE BROTHERS."

Twin boys surprised by their World War II idol Carter and Jack Hanson -- 10-year-old twins -- became enamored with naval warfare after playing the game Battleship. Their interest sparked a family trip to see the the aircraft carrier the Yorktown.

Here's a picture of one of our sisters Girl Scout troop and one of our dads. They went to the Veterans home and sang songs and visited with some of our local heros. It means the world to these seniors to just spend some time with them. Please take the time to visit a Veterans home near you! :)
