πŸ«˜πŸ«‘ The garden is still giving, even with colder weather on the way!

Today's harvest brought in fresh green beans and peppers. With a freeze expected this weekend, I'm keeping a closer eye on what's still growing and making the most of these last days of the season.

What's still producing in YOUR garden right now? Are you harvesting the last of summer's crops, or has your garden called it quits for the year? πŸ‘‡

πŸŒΏπŸ”Ž MYSTERY SOLVED!

These little balls are the dried seed heads of buttonbush, a native shrub growing right here on our property!

Buttonbush has some pretty unusual flowers in summer, too. They look like little white pincushions, with tiny flowers sticking out all around the ball. 🧡🌼

Here's something I found interesting: those dried seed heads aren't just unusual to look at. Buttonbush seeds are also food for ducks and other birds! πŸ¦†

I thought these were neat enough to collect and hang up to dry. Sometimes the most interesting things are growing right in our own backyards!

Have you ever noticed buttonbush growing near a pond or creek?

πŸ”πŸ˜‚ Apparently, the chickens and turkeys have decided the roosting options around here just aren't limited to the coop!

We've got birds in the peach tree, birds in the mulberry trees, and birds perched on top of old pens. They seem to think every available spot belongs to them. 🀣

Farm life definitely keeps us entertained!

What's the strangest place you've caught one of your animals hanging out? πŸ‘‡

πŸΆπŸ’© This is what happens when you decide cow poo is a good place to play!

Venus had herself a little too much fun, and somebody had to pay the price. πŸ˜‚πŸšΏ

Please tell me your pets do ridiculous things like this, too! I can't be the only one dealing with these shenanigans! 🀣

🌿 Roots & Memories β€” Great Grandma's Way

Great Grandma had her own way of doing things. And sometimes, the simplest little things stuck with me for a lifetime.

One thing I remember is how she'd pick grass for the chickens. She had this quick little way of grabbing and picking it that was almost like mowing it by hand.

We'd collect buckets of grass for the chickens, and I watched her do it.

Funny thing is, I still catch myself doing it that same way today. πŸ˜‚

I couldn't tell you when I picked up the habit. I just know I did.

That's how a lot of things were with Grandma and Great Grandma. Nobody sat me down to give me a lesson. I was simply there, watching, helping, and learning without even realizing it.

And years later, I'm still doing things the way they did.

Some things really do get passed down without anyone ever saying a word. ❀️

πŸŽƒπŸŒ² THE LANTERN IN THE HOLLOW πŸŒ²πŸŽƒ

Every town has that one place locals warn you to stay away from after dark.

Around here, it's the hollow down an old dirt road where, every Halloween, a lantern appears deep in the woods. Nobody knows who carries it. Nobody knows why it's there.

But someone always goes looking.

This year, Living My Life spots the lantern glowing between the trees and convinces Farm With Ben to come along. πŸ•―οΈ

They follow the light down an old deer trail until they reach a clearing. The lantern sits on a tree stump, flickering gently, even though there's not a breath of wind.

Beside the stump is a set of muddy footprints leading farther into the woods.

Naturally, Jennie Wicker decides to follow them. πŸ‘£

That's when Katrina's Cottage steps out from behind an ancient oak tree.

They smile like they've been expecting the group all night.

"I wouldn't go any farther," they whisper. "It's almost time."

Before anyone can ask what that means, the lantern goes out.

Every phone dies. The moon disappears behind the clouds. And from somewhere in the darkness, someone calls Wayside Homestead Upstate by name.

The voice sounds exactly like someone they love.

"Come here," it whispers. "I need your help."

And, of course, Dorinda RenΓ© Phillips takes a step toward the voice.

Then another.

Until Amanda Dreaming of a Homestead grabs their arm and screams, "THAT IS NOT WHO YOU THINK IT IS!"

Something moves behind the trees. Something tall enough to reach the lowest branches.

Everyone runs.

Everyone except Cheryl Ann Mattson, who suddenly realizes nobody can remember which direction they came from. πŸ’€

They stumble through the woods until, at last, they see a familiar glow between the trees.

The lantern.

It's sitting on the stump exactly where they left it, burning brightly again.

And standing beside it is The Aussie Backyard Chicken Mumma .

The only problem?

They were supposed to have made it home hours ago.

The lantern flickers once.

Twice.

Then a voice from inside the glass whispers:

"Who's next?"

πŸ‚ Getting things cleaned up around the homestead!

Eric has been working on clearing brush around our lagoon, and it's making a real difference in how much we can see of the pond and pasture from the kitchen window. There's still plenty to do, but we're making progress!

With colder weather coming, we're trying to get some of these projects knocked out while we can.

What outdoor projects are YOU trying to finish before winter?
