July is Disability Pride Month!

Disability Pride Month: July

More than 1 billion people in the world live with disability.
(for reference, there are about 140 million red heads in the world)

Disability is the largest minority group, and the only one you can join at any time. Disability rights and accessibility affect everyone.

Slide 2, Origin.
Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July to commemorate the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990.

This Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in:
- employment
- education
- public spaces
- transportation

The ADA’s legal definition of disability is someone who has a “physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity.”

Slide 3, Disability Pride
Disability is a part of human diversity, and people experience disability in different ways. It is not something to hide or fix.

Disability Pride is about being accepted on their own terms. Everyone deserves inclusion, rights, and respect without having to earn them.

The Arc presents this month’s theme: “The World Works Better With Us,”
emphasizing how when people with disabilities are included, respected, and supported, communities work better for everyone.

Slide 4, How to Celebrate.
1. Connect with people with disabilities: listen to first-hand experiences and perspectives.
2. Learn Disability History and Culture: understand the history of disability rights and presence of people with disabilities throughout all of time.
3. Advocate for Disability Rights and Inclusion: challenge ableism and harmful language, email/call your elected officials and ask them to protect Medicaid, special education, disability civil rights.
