Join us for our FREE Compost Education Workshop on July 15th! Come learn how to make the best, most biologically healthy compost. As a group we will build one of these compost piles for Chico State’s Organic Vegetable Unit. See how compost can be spread on an entire farm through compost teas and extracts. There will be a microscope session at the end for those interested; we will evaluate the live bacterial and fungal content of the compost through the microscope. Hosted by the Organic Vegetable Unit at the Chico State Farm. All other information is in the flyer above!

🥬📣📣📣Big news!!!! 📣📣📣🥬 We are excited to officially announce our transition to the Chico State Organic Vegetable Unit. We still do all the great things we’ve always done, just now with more support, stability, and a new name. The Organic Vegetable Unit is now fully funded by the state of California, rather than grant funded, which it had been since its beginning in 2008.

With great dedication and perseverance, Scott Grist, Manager of the Organic Vegetable Project for the last 7 years, fought to solidify and legitimize organic vegetable farming at the Chico State Farm by increasing production and efficiency, and showing the true potential and community benefit of a highly diverse organic vegetable farm. Not only is this new change beneficial to the Organic Vegetable Unit with full financial support by Chico State, but it’s also culturally important to see a government entity like Chico State be convinced that organic and regenerative farming should be supported at the same level as all other conventional commodities produced at the Chico State Farm.
Thank you to everyone who supported us over the years. Growing food and teaching about organic agriculture are what we do here and it wouldn’t be what it is without you, the community member, choosing locally grown food. Thank you to the Wildcat Food Pantry for always buying our produce and offering it for free to students in need. Thank you to for supporting the OVP, financially and spiritually, for as long as they did. Thank you to the College of Ag staff and faculty. The shared resources and support they give is essential to our success. And the biggest thank you is to the students. They do all the hard work and heavy lifting on the farm. Shout out to the current field crew, pictured above. They are the most conscious and dedicated students Chico State has to offer and without them, we would not have achieved the heights we’ve reached at the Organic Vegetable Unit.
Here’s to the future of farming!

Hello organic vegetable lovers,

Springtime is here, and that means the Organic Vegetable Project’s CSA Program is about to start. The first box pick up will be on Thursday, May 7th 12pm-4pm and then every Thursday after that. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, because it is people like you who support local farms like us, through programs like this. For our CSA, a monthly subscription fee buys you a share of our harvests. Every week, we curate boxes of our best and most recently harvested organic vegetables and fruits to ensure community members have access to the freshest, in-season, local, organic food. If you are interested, please view the CSA Member Agreement link in the bio for a more detailed breakdown of the program. If you would like to sign up now, respond to this email, letting me know, and I will put you on the list while you arrange for payment. There are limited spots, so sign up now if you can. After reading the applications, if you still have questions, please feel free to email me, [email protected]. Feel free to also share this with friends. Thank you for your past and/or future support of the farm and thank you for taking the time to read this. Have a great day!

The Organic Vegetable Project is hosting a Composting Workshop on Thursday Nov. 13th 9am-11am at the Chico State Farm. This event is FREE and open to the public. You will learn how to create a compost pile in Dr. Elaine Ingham’s composting technique for high quality, microbially active compost. During the workshop, you will build a compost pile to be the source of the OVP’s input for their compost tea brewer. Declan Ramsay-Malone will be leading the workshop. 311 Nicholas C. One of our biggest goals here at the Organic Vegetable Project is to give students opportunities to learn about organic farming with hands-on experience. Chico State students learn on the farm through classes, internships for credit, and part-time paid positions.

If you are interested in an internship, email Program Manager Scott Grist at sgrist@csuchico.
