Ally Med is on vacation. The advocacy apparently did not get the memo. 🌴☀️

I’m in Florida—sunshine, palm trees, beautiful beaches…and a reminder that your ZIP code can still have a lot to say about how safe it feels to simply exist as yourself.

Nothing like vacationing in a red state to make you reflect on the fact that LGBTQIA+ rights, gender-affirming care, and basic dignity can look very different depending on which side of a state line you're standing on.

So yes, I’m resting.
I’m swimming.
I’m eating things I absolutely did not log into MyFitnessPal.
But I’m also paying attention.

Because Ally Med was never just about PowerPoints and trainings. It’s about pushing healthcare toward a place where affirming care isn’t dependent on geography, politics, or whether someone thinks your identity is up for debate.

Apparently, I can take a vacation from work.
I cannot take a vacation from noticing s**t. 😎🌴

BREAKING NEWS:
LGBTQIA+ patients do not actually enjoy turning every healthcare visit into a surprise educational seminar.

Today’s complimentary courses include:

“Pronouns 101”
“No, My Partner Is Not My Roommate”
“Yes, That Is Still My Name”
“Please Stop Asking What My ‘Real’ Name Is”

And the hospital’s most popular course:

“WHY AM I TEACHING YOU THIS WHILE MY BUTT IS HANGING OUT OF A GOWN?”

Healthcare professionals:

We can memorize 47 medications that all end in -pril, -olol, and -statin, but suddenly somebody says they/them and the whole unit needs a multidisciplinary huddle.

Come on. 😂

Learn it. Chart it. Respect it. Move on.

Your patient came for healthcare.

Not to provide your mandatory diversity training from the stretcher.

WELCOME TO THE ER.

Chest pain?
We got you.

Stroke symptoms?
Activate the team.

Sepsis?
Start the protocol.

Patient uses they/them pronouns?

Everybody remain calm.

Apparently this is the emergency nobody trained for.

Your LGBTQIA+ patient shouldn't be the most complicated thing in the room.

Learn the damn pronouns. Save the drama for the waiting room.

History has a pattern. History has never been kind to healthcare when it chose politics over patients.

We've seen it with HIV.
We've seen it with mental health.
We've seen it with addiction.
We've seen it with reproductive care.

First, we debate whether certain people deserve care. Then we debate what kind of care they deserve. Years later, we look back and wonder how we ever justified treating people differently in the first place.

Healthcare has been on the wrong side of history before. We don't have to repeat it.

The measure of a healthcare system isn't how it treats the majority. It's how it treats the people with the least power, the loudest critics, and the greatest barriers to care.

History is being written in our exam rooms every single day.
What story are we telling?

Pride Month is here. 🏳️‍🌈

Pride is more than a celebration. It is a reminder that every person deserves to be seen, respected, and safe being exactly who they are.

This month, we honor the resilience, courage, and contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals while recognizing that health equity, inclusion, and affirming care are still works in progress.

Happy Pride Month to our LGBTQIA+ community, allies, advocates, healthcare professionals, patients, families, and friends. You belong. You matter. And you deserve to be treated with compassion and respect.

To the people asking why Pride Month still matters:

Because people are still denied care.
Because people are still afraid to be themselves.
Because some patients still wonder if they'll be treated with dignity before they even walk through the door.

Pride isn't about being better than anyone else. It's about making sure everyone has the same opportunity to live openly, safely, and authentically.

The goal isn't special treatment.
The goal is equal treatment.

And if celebrating dignity, respect, and human rights for all makes you uncomfortable, that discomfort is worth examining.

Dear Healthcare Professionals,

If you accidentally use the wrong pronoun:

Step 1: Correct yourself.
Step 2: Move on.

The answer is almost never:
Step 3: Deliver a five-minute apology that makes the patient comfort YOU.

People love saying “everyone is welcome here.”
Okay.
Does your paperwork reflect that?
Your staff training?
Your policies?
Your waiting room conversations?

Or is it just a sticker on the door?

Another trans life stolen.
Another community grieving.
Another reminder that existing while trans can still be dangerous in this country.

At Ally Med, i refuse to let these deaths become background noise.

Healthcare providers, social workers, educators, and systems leaders all have a role in creating safety — not just in policy, but in practice. Respecting names. Using correct pronouns. Challenging bias. Protecting dignity. Listening without judgment. Speaking up when others stay silent.

Affirming care is not “extra.”
It is lifesaving.

To the trans community: you deserve safety, joy, healthcare, and a future. I see you. I stand with you. 🏳️‍⚧️

Healthcare workers can pronounce ‘hydrochlorothiazide’ on the first try but freeze at ‘they/them.'
