An incredibly profound day. in partnership with local nonprofit partners, hosted a People’s Hearing in Chicago covering the harm and impact of the federal government’s targeting of immigrant communities. I provided testimony about the overall economic impacts this caused. Grateful to be able to advocate for community in this way. || also grateful for Chairwoman Garza’s leadership during today’s hearing and the care, empathy, and commitment shown to impacted communities. I’ve been an admirer of this bad ass Lawtina for a while!! Glad to have finally met!

What Do I Care Who Wins California? The Governor’s Race and Influencers

For long time readers, you know that I often create content around civic engagement to encourage people to vote. I also don't shy away from endorsements, but usually stick to presidential/local (to me) candidates. With Xavier Becerra so close to the finish line, I was thisclose from reaching out to their team to ask if they needed any help to amplify his candidacy--pro bono, of course, because I wouldn't take money if I'm endorsing someone....

Every year Latino Unity Day gets bigger and bigger. It is such a testament to the work and dedication of Illinois Latino leaders, from electeds to grass roots organizers, coming together to demand our fair share of resources, policies, and representation. As always abolish 🧊

If you had asked me in early april how the Obama Leaders program went, I would have said it was filled with rich lessons in leadership, difficult dialogue, and future forward thinking. But if you ask me now, still in the glow of a jam packed weekend, where so many of the 100 2026 LOTUS leaders came to Chicago to meet face to face for the first time, my perception about the program is less about lessons learned and more about the pride and awe I have to be in company with these leaders doing such amazing, change-making work. I also love, love, love every opportunity to welcome folks to Chicago and see them experience it for the first time. Nothing like it! || but yes, some lessons learned: 1. Leave the room smarter than when you entered (both yourself and the space); 2. Dialogue with everyone, esp when you disagree; 3. Hope is a choice (the last lesson I took). It is a choice, an action, and a promise. 💕

Whew!😅 so for those that pick up on professional norms quickly you may notice that your rise up in the ranks easily and that may be part of your own professional or financial plan, but what do you do when you’re given access to some form of hiring power? Do you promote antiquated ideas of professionalism or do you look for ways to push back so you can help others who aren’t part of the status quo advance in their careers? In stories, I share a classic blog post, where I dive into why we should avoid gatekeeping & ways to recognize when you’re doing it. 💕

TGIF 🥳🥳🥳

These three actions set my morning & routine helps me feel accomplished bc regardless of what the rest of the looks like i know ive already been kind to my mind and body ☺️ || morning exercise need not be intense! I walk between 3.5-4 miles in the morning depending on my energy & this helps me get in my steps and break a good sweat 💦 || i used to not eat breakfast or grab a sugary coffee and pastry and wondered why I was crashing by lunch. Now I eat the same thing to keep it simple (and sometimes I’ll add granola 😅) but ensuring I have this at the start of the day gives me energy & nutrients that I was getting before. || everyone has their own personal politics around makeup, use it if you like but for meeeeee I don’t leave home without it 🫠 minimum concealer and lipstick but if that’s all I’m wearing it’s prob bc I’m heading to the ER 😂😂 || what are your morning non-negotiables?

Can we pretend it’s almost summer ☀️ these are my must-haves when I’m out in the sun & what I used daily while in Cabo—I love a 50spf for my back & chest; 30spf for legs + a good oil; a face spf (mandatory); a lip spf —and this gloss is 😘; and some gold shine just to put it all together 💅🏽 I love these products bc the spf products really work, they are not too heavy, no weird white cast, and smell exactly like a beach vacation 😍

Advocate for women every month! In the aftermath of the Chavez revelations I’ve been thinking a lot about accountability. Even more so here in Chicago as we see a DV surge, including fatal dv shootings increase by 50%, all while city leaders celebrate a decrease in crime. In the latest bog post, I ask where does the burden lie? Why is it always on the survivor to figure out a way to escape, to survive, to heal, and in cases where survivors are asked to sacrifice for a greater good, to absolve? When do we start to talk about prevention? When do we create policy that imagines a world where resources are provided, but equally important, work is done to prevent the abuse of women? My hope is that the swift action taken to address and dismantle a legacy built on harm and fear is our new collective approach. And may every pedestal an abuser is placed upon, crumble.

Lately I’ve Been Thinking About: Accountability in the Wake of Chavez

As we bid Women's History Month goodbye, I keep thinking about accountability. Specifically around the harm to women and what we can do to shift the burden. I've been thinking about this both in the aftermath of the Chavez revelations; the fact that a 96 year old woman is still expected to be a perfect victim; and closer to home, the astronomical DV homicide rates here in Chicago, the majority happen in the south and west sides, where domestic fatal shootings increased by 50%, all while City leaders celebrate a decrease in violence....
