A practical way to think about equity in addiction care: identify barriers, improve access, respect patient needs and make sure treatment quality does not depend on who walks through the door.

DEI in addiction medicine stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. It means actively ensuring diverse patient and workforce representation, equitable access to prevention and treatment, culturally responsive care, and research that addresses disparities. DEI work includes clinician training, removing systemic barriers, and designing policies that improve outcomes for marginalized populations. Prioritizing DEI enhances trust, engagement, and recovery success across communities. Tune in and Learn More. https://youtu.be/MF6CTUzOAlU

The call I almost ignored. My mom and I had been estranged until two days before she died. I visited the weekend she was sick; she said things that cut deep, so I left in anger—telling my kids to wait in the car and flinging my keys. Two days later she called. I hesitated, bracing for blame, but I answered. For the first time she said, "I'm sorry." That brief apology didn't erase years of hurt, but it stayed with me and reminded me relationships can change suddenly, even at the end. Watch the full conversation: https://buff.ly/5qVcsbV

The way we talk about addiction matters.

When conversations begin with judgment, people often shut down. When they begin with knowledge, compassion and honest information, we create room for understanding—and better decisions.

That is why Ask Dr. Dora talks openly about addiction, trauma, mental health, recovery and public health.
Not to sensationalize the conversation.
To change it through education.

Follow for thoughtful conversations, practical education and real talk about the issues affecting individuals, families and communities.

Addiction affects more than the person using a substance.
It affects families, healthcare systems, workplaces and entire communities.

That is why effective responses require more than punishment or telling someone to “just stop.”
Prevention matters. Treatment matters. Recovery support matters. Reducing stigma matters.

When we recognize addiction as a healthcare and public-health issue, the conversation can shift from blame alone toward evidence-informed solutions that help people get well and help communities become healthier.

That is part of the conversation we are building at Ask Dr. Dora.
What do you believe needs to change most in the way we respond to addiction?

Can someone take responsibility for serious harm—and still believe they deserve a chance to change?

Timothy Youngblood returns for Part 2 of one of our most difficult conversations yet.

Dr. Dora and Tim discuss the choices that led to his sexual-assault conviction, years of incarceration, what he says he has learned about consent and power, the realities of reentry, gambling and risk-taking, faith—and what accountability looks like when the consequences continue long after prison.

This conversation does not excuse violence.
Understanding behavior is not the same as excusing it.
Accountability matters. Consent matters. Harm matters. And so does the question of whether people can change.
