St. Josaphat School

Blue Ribbon award winning Catholic School, located in Chicago's vibrant Lincoln Park neighborhood Founded in 1884, St. St. Josaphat School for 98 years.

Josaphat Parish quickly saw that part of its mission was to educate the young of the immigrant Kashube families. Josaphat School, staffed by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, numbered 186 boys and 151 girls at its inception. In 1885, the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth Congregation replaced the Sisters of Charity, and they remained with St. The school began as part of the church

building on the northwest corner of Belden and Wayne. In its earliest years, St. Josaphat School was also an orphanage for 10 to 80 children. In 1900, the present church was constructed; opening more space in the old church/school building directly to the east. In 1913, a new addition to the school on the southeast corner of Belden and Southport was constructed to help hold the 1,000 plus students in attendance. In 1925, there were 15 teaching sisters and a school enrollment of 1,112. In 1962, the new school/convent annex was completed in 1966, and the original school and convent buildings were razed. Gone were the fabled bowling alleys and the Commercial High School! By 1986, the numbers in the school had dwindled to just over 100 and only five classrooms were in use. However...

1987 saw the rebirth of the school. Within three years over 250 students were registered in classrooms. A pre-school was added. A computer room, library, and a music room were added and the extended-day program was initiated. These programs with energetic teachers and responsive, involved parents make St. Josaphat the wonderful school it is. In August of 2012, five early childhood classrooms, a media center, a new reception area, and a new elevator were opened. This addition joined the two existing buildings with the creation of a new hallway. As the neighborhood has undergone many changes in its history, the school has adapted and developed. There is a feeling of growth and a sense of opportunity not to be missed that pervades in the school today. Generations of generous people have supported St. Josaphat School and have brought it to this point. We are most grateful to them and to the generations to come.

💙¡Vamos, Graham! 🦅🎉 Huge shoutout to our amazing 3rd grade HAWK, Graham, for being featured in the global “Rockalingua in Action!” video showcase! 🎬✨ For those who don’t know, Rockalingua is one of our awesome elementary Spanish curriculums here at SJS. They hosted a massive competition for teachers and students to submit videos following their curriculum guidelines. Out of so many entries from Spanish classrooms everywhere, only a select few were chosen—and Graham’s video made the cut! 🌟👏
We are so incredibly proud of your hard work and Spanish speaking skills, Graham! Way to soar high! 🦅💙🙌🏻

🦅Once a 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊, always a 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊!🦅 Tonight our 𝟪𝑡ℎ 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊𝐒 graduate — hats off to these amazing young leaders! 🎓👏 We’re so proud of the kindness, courage, & school spirit they’ve shown all year. The lessons learned here at 𝐒𝐉𝐒 will carry them forward. We are incredibly proud of them & the bright futures they’re building. We can’t wait to see what high school has in store — go show them what 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊𝐒 can do! ✨💙

Big 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊 congratulations to Grace! She has been a student at 𝐒𝐉𝐒 since PK3 and loves (& will miss!) the fun she has had with everyone throughout classes & activities. Grace will attend 𝑆𝑡 𝐼𝑔𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑢𝑠 𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑔𝑒 𝑃𝑟𝑒𝑝 in the fall. 🙌💙🦅

🦖🐾 𝐒𝐉𝐒 was 𝑊𝐼𝐿𝐷 last week & animals were on the loose! Our 𝟤𝑛𝑑 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊𝐒 stole the show at the annual 𝑺𝑱𝑺 𝑨𝒏𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝑾𝒂𝒙 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒖𝒎 🦅🦁🦋. So many creative costumes, facts, and smiles — these 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊𝐒 made their animals come to life! The museum featured student research displays with fun facts about each animal. Teachers, students, & families toured the “exhibit” and loved the live presentations. Everyone 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑙𝑒𝑑...we mean 𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑑...as these 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊𝐒 posed and shared what they learned!

🦅 Today we had the honor of celebrating our 8th grade HAWKS during our annual SJS Ribbon Mass & Awards Ceremony. These HAWKS also had the opportunity to share their Vision of the Graduate Presentations to their families & the greater SJS community. During this time, they shared how SJS has shaped them over the years & how the skills learned here will guide them through high school. The 8th Grade Milestone List is getting shorter & we are looking forward to celebrating these amazing humans on Friday at their graduation ceremony! 🙌🏻🎓💙
