Undeniably saddened to hear about the resignation of a dear friend and mentor to many, Marcus Mason. Marcus worked in the Undergraduates Admissions Office (UAO) as Associate Director of Admission, Multicultural Recruitment at .
In reading Marcus’s resignation letter, seeing all of the racially targeted experiences that he went through as a Black staff member at LUC while being such a wonderful support for Black students, we are frustrated and heartbroken. His resignation comes after years of witnessing and experiencing countless acts of racism, homophobia, and xenophobia in his department. Marcus’s experience is not an isolated incident at LUC as he even cites others who resigned from the same office over the years in his letter. He states how his boss, Erin Moriarty (Dean of Undergraduate Admission), harmfully treated him and other Black and Brown staff unfairly, reinforced White supremacy, and claimed that it is good for her colleagues to fear her. This is unacceptable. Still upholding her supremacist-based leadership, workers from the UAO report that Erin has been running the office as usual and has not mentioned Marcus’s resignation letter. To make matters even worse, Erin’s boss, Paul Roberts (VP of Enrollment Management) penned an email congratulating the UAO on their efforts to diversify the school and made an effort to “call out positive change” that the UAO is promoting, while completely negating Marcus’s cited experiences.
As students, we have the ability to fight for change in a way that staff cannot. In fighting on behalf of Black students, Black faculty, and Black staff of Loyola University Chicago, NotMyLoyola denounces the racist behavior and leadership exhibited in the UAO and the ways in which it directly connects to the lack of recruitment of Black students.
If our institution truly seeks to be anti-racist in its functioning, we call for the resignation of Erin Moriarty.
