Sometimes we focus so much on what we plan to say or teach that we forget how much people are already taking in before we ever begin.

A space can make something feel easy to reach.

Or hard to find.

Welcoming.

Or like you are not quite sure where you fit.

And no, I am not talking about creating a perfect classroom.

I am thinking about the everyday experience of being in the space.

This week, I’m looking a little closer at what our early childhood environments are making possible for children, families, and educators.

Because the room is doing some of the work too. 💛

There was a point in my career when I thought doing a really good job as a trainer meant making everything as clear and step by step as possible.

And I still believe clarity matters.

But coaching and working alongside educators taught me something else:

Sometimes the person heard exactly what I said. They just weren’t finished learning yet.

Because some questions do not show up during the training.

They show up the next morning.

When you try it.

When your classroom does not look exactly like the example.

When something that made sense in the room feels different once real life enters the picture.

That changed something for me.

I do not only want people leaving professional learning knowing what I said.

I want the learning close enough to their actual work that they can think with it, try it, question it, and keep learning from it.

That is the reflection behind my newest Journal:

The part I keep coming back to is what happens right after someone offers a perspective we were not expecting.

That moment tells people a lot.

Not every idea has to be used.

Not every decision has to change.

But if I invited perspective, I want to be careful not to make agreement the only answer that feels welcome.

That is the Real Talk I’m sitting with today. 🤎

A public-comment period is an opportunity for the people who know Head Start from the inside — educators, families, leaders, alumni, grandparents, community partners, and advocates — to share what they know from experience.

You do not have to be a policy expert to participate.

The IHSA 30-Day Comment Challenge provides daily prompts connected to the proposed Head Start rule changes so you can learn about an issue, think about what it could mean in practice, and write from your own perspective.

You can participate in one day, several days, or simply choose the issues that connect most closely to your experience.

FRIYAY, ECE world! 😂💛

We made it.

Just one more shift for most, and then it’s officially time to let the weekend have us. 😭😂

Get through the day.
Handle what needs handling.
Find the last little bit of patience hiding somewhere.
And then go enjoy your weekend.

No deep reflection today.
No leadership question.
Just… we made it to Friday. 🙌🏽

And love to my ECE people working this weekend too — your Friday may not mean “off,” but I hope you still get a little room to breathe. 🤎

When families give us their time, I want to think about the experience from their side too.

They may have gotten every announcement, date, and reminder they needed — and that matters.

But if we are calling the gathering family engagement, I also want to know whether there was room for families to participate in a way that felt useful to them.

Not everybody wants to speak in front of a room.

Not everybody needs an activity.

Sometimes participation is listening, writing something down, asking privately, or leaving with something useful to think about later.

That is the lens I’m carrying into today’s conversation. 💛

After a meeting, I can tell you everything I covered and still not know whether the team had a real chance to think.

That is the part I’m looking at today.

Not who talked the most.

Not whether the room was loud.

Where did other people’s thinking actually enter the conversation?

That is a different way to look at participation. 👀

One of the easiest ways to make a meeting feel “interactive” is to add an activity.

But that is not always what the work needs.

Sometimes the most useful thing is information. Sometimes it is a chance to compare what people are noticing. Sometimes it is practice before trying something in the classroom.

The question is not simply, “How do I make this meeting more engaging?”

It is: What kind of participation would actually help with this situation?

That is the difference I’m showing in today’s example. 💛

Before I put another meeting on the calendar, I want to know what being together is supposed to make possible.

There are times when the best thing we can do is simply give people the information.

And there are other times when we actually need people’s thinking in the room.

Think about the last meeting that really felt worth gathering for. What happened because people were together that would have been harder to get from an update alone?

That is the question I’m carrying into this week. 💛
