Chicago Greektown Educational Foundation Remembers Vicky Zemenides

With profound sorrow, we at the Chicago Greektown Educational Foundation join the broader Hellenic community in mourning the loss of Vicky Zemenides, beloved wife of our friend and partner in community work, Endy Zemenides, Executive Director of the Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC).

Vicky passed away on April 13, 2025, after a courageous and grace-filled battle with cancer. She was a woman of quiet strength, deep compassion, and remarkable resilience — a light to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Over the past year, even in the face of the most difficult challenges, Vicky embodied bravery and hope. Her calm, unwavering presence and her love for her family and community inspired so many. Her legacy lives on in her three beautiful children, George, Dimitris, and Irini, and in the countless lives she touched through her kindness and dignity.

To Endy and the entire Zemenides family, we extend our heartfelt condolences. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you. We mourn alongside you and honor Vicky’s memory with love and respect.

We celebrated the 9th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, and what a night it was! The holiday spirit filled the air as students serenaded our local businesses with the beloved Kalanta 🎵, spreading joy and preserving cherished Greek traditions in our community.

This celebration with Greektown Chicago, Chicago Greektown Chamber of Commerce, Alderman Bill Conway and the community is a testament to the unity and culture that make Greektown Chicago so special. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and a special shoutout to the incredible students, families, and businesses who made this evening unforgettable!

On October 28, 1940, Greece made history with a single, powerful word: “OXI” (No). This brave refusal to surrender marked the start of Greece’s resistance against fascism during WWII, inspiring nations and embodying the Greek spirit of resilience and freedom.

Today, we honor the courage of those who stood against tyranny and remember the values that unite us: bravery, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to education and empowerment. The Chicago Greektown Educational Foundation proudly celebrates OXI Day by nurturing the next generation, grounded in the same values that defined this pivotal moment in Greek history.
