Constipation is a very common problem in children. A child is considered constipated when he or she has fewer than three bowel movements in a week; has trouble having a bowel movement; or when the stool is hard, dry, and usually large. Diets high in processed food, cheeses, white bread and bagels and meats can cause a child to become constipated fairly often. In babies, constipation can happen as they move from breast milk to baby formula or from baby food to solid foods.

Some children get constipated because of irritable bowel syndrome. IBS can occur when a child is stressed or eats certain trigger foods, which are often fatty and spicy. A child with IBS may have either constipation or diarrhea, as well as stomach pain or gas. While constipation provides discomfort to a child, it usually isn’t a cause for great concern. In rare cases, constipation is a sign of other medical illnesses; so talk to your child’s pediatrician if your child continues to have problems.

Generally, signs of constipation in children can include:
• going less than usual
• having trouble or pain when going to the bathroom
• feeling full or bloated
• straining to p**p
• seeing blood on the toilet paper

Constipation is easy to avoid by adopting healthy eating and exercise habits. Parents are encouraged to give their children more fluids, serve more fiber, make sure kids get enough exercise, develop a regular meal schedule and get kids in the habit of going to the bathroom.

Did you know that 79 million Americans currently have HPV and many people don’t even know they are infected?

Cervical Health Awareness Month raises awareness about women protecting themselves from HPV (human papillomavirus) and cervical cancer. HPV is the most common transmitted disease and is also a major cause of cervical cancer. Women are advised to get the HPV vaccine and get regular screening test (called Pap test), which can detect abnormal cells early, before they turn into cancer. Most deaths from cervical cancer could be prevented by regular Pap tests and follow-up care.

The HPV virus and infection usually cannot harm an unborn child, nor, affect its development. During childbirth, the risk of HPV transmission to the baby is very low. Even if babies do get the HPV virus, their bodies usually clear the virus on their own. In very rare cases a baby can develop warts in the throat. This condition is called respiratory papillomatosis and may require frequent laser surgery to prevent the warts from blocking the baby's breathing passages. Depending on the extent of the warts, the doctor may postpone treatment until after childbirth.

Did you know that most birth defects happen during the first 3 months of pregnancy? One out of every 33 babies in the United States is born with a birth defect; estimating 120 babies are born with a birth defect annually. Many children show problems of developmental origin with time, e.g., 6 to 7% by one year of age and 12% to 14% by school age. Birth defects can affect almost any part of the body and can affect how the body looks, works or both.

About 10% of problems seen at birth can be traced to a specific agent (environmental agent, drug, biologic, or nutritional factor). About 20% are inherited or are associated with chromosomal changes. The remaining 70% are of unknown etiology.

The medical costs of care for children with disabilities resulting from birth defects have been estimated to exceed $1.4 billion annually.

While all birth defects cannot be prevented, women can take preventative steps to increase their chances of having a healthy baby by managing health conditions and adopting healthy behaviors before becoming, and during pregnancies.

Pregnancy is an exciting time and taking care of yourself gives your baby a healthy start in life!

M.I.R.A.C.L.E.’s Online Books, Inc. 1st Annual Book Donation of 100 books was successfully completed!

We extend a special “thank you” to the youth of New Life Covenant Church, S.E. – Identity Team; the youth joyfully committed their time to book wrapping for this cause. Afterwards, we enjoyed peer-dialogue that motivated the younger children prior to enjoying pizza donated from Chicago's Pizzeria UNO . Appreciation also goes to Stephanie Hondras, wrapping instructor and Al Brown, photographer.

I was excited, along with my children Brittany McCray and Bryant McCray to personally meet members of the Child Life staff departments, and deliver the 100 character building books with read-along CD's to Comer Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago, La Rabida Children's Hospital and Shriners Hospitals for Children during this Holiday Season.

Globally, more than 240,000 children were infected with HIV during 2013; that is nearly 700 new infections every day: In 2013, 91% of children living with HIV live in Africa; out of 1.5 million children infected, 190,000 died of AIDS-related illnesses.

Children continue to become infected with AIDS due to: Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT); underage sexual transmission; children who inject drugs; and blood transfusions;

We encourage you to recognize and support children dealing with AIDS by treating and accepting them as individuals and not a disease.
