🌸 Spring is in full bloom in Jr. Math Builders! 🌸

Students explored number bonds through a fun spring-themed activity using flower templates with numbers in the center of each flower. They worked to discover all the different number combinations that make each total. Each matching pair was written on flower petals, with equal sums placed opposite each other and colored the same way. ➕➗

Through hands-on learning, students strengthened their understanding of how numbers can be split into parts and combined to make a whole, all while creating colorful spring math flowers! 🌷✨

🦆 In Gosling Lifecycles, students explored the science behind duck buoyancy and propulsion!

Using creativity and engineering skills, they built rubber-band powered “duck feet” boats and investigated how ducks stay afloat and move through water. To end the lesson, our ducklings enjoyed a supervised swim complete with duckweed and krill treats before students carefully dried them off and returned them to their enclosure. 💦✨

Hillel Torah 8th graders visited Walder Science for a hands-on lab where they created three different gases through chemical reactions. 🧪

Students observed bubbling mixtures while producing carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and oxygen, and tested each gas in memorable ways—putting out flames, creating a popping sound, and relighting a glowing splint. Along the way, they identified key signs of chemical change and connected their observations to important energy concepts like endothermic reactions, where energy is absorbed and surroundings may feel cooler, and exothermic reactions, where energy is released and the test tubes felt warmer.

This engaging experience enhanced students’ understanding of how energy and matter interact while building confidence in their lab skills.

Magnets are seriously fun! 🧲 Students tested materials, built magnetic fishing games, and even made paperclips “float” as they explored attraction, repulsion, and magnetic force at a distance. From north and south poles to hands-on mazes, the discoveries kept coming!

🔍 Last Sunday, our Young Science Explorers enjoyed a scavenger hunt in Park 538 on the corner of Kedzie and Touhy. Students walked around the park, carefully observing and listening to different birds that are native to Chicago and our neighborhood 🐦👀 They were excited to hear bird calls and try to spot them in the trees. Along the way, they also discovered many different types of plants and learned about the variety of species that grow in our local environment 🌱🌼

A huge thank you to Adina Mayer of JNDC for leading this fun and educational adventure!

In the after-school science pottery & textiles class, students got hands-on with clay! After purifying locally harvested wild clay, they practiced key hand-building techniques like wedging, scoring, slipping, and rolling slabs to create their own simple pots. 🎨✨

💡 We’re excited to launch the Dr. Michael H. Salinger Z”L Science Fair in collaboration with the ATT! ✨

This brand-new community initiative invites 5th–8th graders at ATT-affiliated schools to explore engaging topics through real experimentation and discovery. Students will think like real scientists as they choose a question, design and run a hands-on experiment, and present their findings at a live exhibition.

Don’t miss your chance, registration closes Monday, May 4. ⏰
