ONE MONTH TO MOTHER JONES
On September 21st I will premier my newest Historical Woman of Letters, Mother Jones. Irish born Mary Harris Jones became Mother Jones, the voice of the American worker and the coal miners in particular. Once called “The Most Dangerous Woman in America”, she was a fiery orator and fearless organizer for the mine workers during the first two decades of the 20th century. She helped coordinate major strikes, secure bans on child labor, and co-founded the trade union, Industrial Workers of the World. From Pennsylvania to Colorado, from Mexico to Milwaukee Wisconsin, Mother Jones advocated, agitated, and testified before Congress for "human conditions for human beings".

Today we celebrate the birth of an author, a woman whose imagination forever changed children’s literature. An artist of exceptional talent, a determined businesswoman who forged her own path, a passionate protector of the Lake District and the communities she cared so deeply about.

One hundred and sixty years ago, Beatrix Potter entered the world. Her stories have since crossed continents and generations, finding a place in countless homes and hearts.

On this special anniversary, The Beatrix Potter Society is honoured to celebrate her life, her legacy, and the extraordinary gifts she gave to the world.

Happy 160th Birthday, Beatrix Potter.

Happy Birthday, Beatrix Potter! 🎂

Today marks the 160th anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth.

Born in 1866, this extraordinary author, artist and conservationist has become one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, renowned for her wit; her entrepreneurial spirit; her conservation work for the British countryside; and her cast of charming animal characters including Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-duck, Squirrel Nutkin, Benjamin Bunny and Mrs. Tiggy-winkle. 🐰🦆🐿️🦔

What would you want to say to Beatrix if she were here today? 💙

On this day in 1905, Beatrix Potter received a marriage proposal from her publisher, Norman Warne. She joyfully accepted, although her parents did not approve. Sadly, not long after she accepted his proposal, Norman Warne died from lymphatic leukaemia.
