LEAP's Language for Scholars program teaches Black and Brown students communications skills without asking them to leave their identity at the door, and it’s making a difference.
Chapin Hall evaluated the program with 11th graders across two Chicago high schools and found participants gained stronger verbal and nonverbal communication skills, greater confidence in different settings, and a deeper feeling of authentic voice.
The takeaway is clear: when students have the tools to express themselves, they make big strides in their skills and confidence, which make them more prepared to achieve their life goals. - Janel Winter - Assistant Commissioner and Director, Division of Housing and Community Resources at the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs

Before participating in LEAP's Language for Scholars program, 40% of students did not feel confident or like their true selves when communicating in different situations. After the program? That dropped to 13%.
New research from Tiffany Burkhardt, Citlalli Garcia Mendoza, and Lee Ann Huang at Chapin Hall shows that after completing the program, 87% of students agreed that they felt confident and like their authentic selves when communicating across settings — up from 60% before the program. These significant gains show what happens when Black and Brown youth are given practical tools and training to express themselves.
