Jocelyn is an Inclusion Companion with us, supporting kids in our partner agencies’ programs throughout the year. Read on for Jocelyn’s great interview!

How long have you been with NSSRA, and why did you apply? I have been with NSSRA for three years. I applied because I loved working with kids who have special needs, and a friend of mine suggested that I apply for NSSRA and the rest is history!

Tell us something unique about yourself. I am one of ten kids in my family, the sixth in order.

What surprised you about your role when you first started? I was surprised with how many new things I learned! Every program I learn something new and I love it!

What’s challenging about your job? Probably the most challenging (but also one of my favorite things about this job) is getting to know new kids and learning how to best support them in their activities.

What’s your favorite memory so far? I have so many amazing memories but probably some of my favorites were when I got to help out with the young performance shows. I loved getting to be up on the stage with the kids and see them shine in shows like Aladdin, and High School Musical.

What advice would you have for someone who’s just joined ? This is the best and probably the most rewarding job you can have! You are going to have so much fun and learn so many new skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help and admit it when you don't have the answers, there are so many people that are willing to give you tips and ideas.

An emotional announcement sent out this morning:

Hello families,

I am writing to inform you of some sad (and happy) news. The sad news is that effective January 1, 2019, Suburban Sitters will be closing indefinitely. This is not a result of anything negative; rather, it is because I will be graduating college in May and have decided to prioritize other job opportunities. The happy news is that since its founding in 2013 (almost 5 years ago exactly), Suburban Sitters has worked with 300+ families and 40+ sitters to fill 1650+ jobs. It has been an overwhelming success, and I could not be more proud. One day, we may reopen, and, of course, you will be the first to know.

Beginning in 2019, sitters may begin working autonomously with families they have met through Suburban Sitters. If you would like the contact information of a sitter you have worked with before, please let me know. We want the transition to be as smooth as possible for everyone involved. For families who are currently working with a sitter on a regular basis, we encourage you to confirm with your sitter that he/she will be continuing in 2019.

It has been a joy to work with you. Best wishes to your family, and thank you for choosing Suburban Sitters!
