Key takeaways from a newly published article from Boston Congress of Public Health … Are we AVOIDING a major public health concern??

“The aim of public health efforts should not be to eliminate discomfort. Discomfort is inevitable and, in the conversation of growth and adaptability, it is essential. The focus should be on engaging with challenge in a healthy and empowering manner, thereby minimizing the tendencies of denial and avoidance.

To be clear, this is not a call for people to be more confrontational. When engaging with potential stressors, a deep toolkit will build that includes empathy, listening skills, and adaptability.”

Grateful to Dr. Circe Gray Le Compte and the good people at Boston Congress of Public Health, Publisher of BCPH Review for publishing this article: “Are We Avoiding a Major Public Health Concern?”

Eyre has been part of The Bloc since he was 10 years old.

He’s the organization’s top fighter, valedictorian of his middle school, and has earned a 4.0 GPA.

From July 23-26, Eyre has the opportunity to compete in the 3rd Annual Rival Amateur Boxing Championship in Oklahoma City.

Eyre has done the work. Now we need to get him there!

Grateful to the editors at the Virginia Journal for highlighting the work we did with Melissa Brody: Opportunities to Promote the Use of Exercise for Affective Improvement.

🧠Improved mood, focus, and wakefulness seem to be some of the most powerful benefits of exercise (certain sorts of exercise).

There’s a real opportunity here. Professionals who understand what exercise can (and can’t) do, can support a team, a school, an organization, or their own life in fantastic ways.

Worth checking out. But it’s just the beginning!

This year we offered an award in honor of one of the founding members of the Good Athlete Project.

Jim Davis Sr (aka, the Duke) was a division one defensive lineman. He would often credit his high school football coach Mac McCarty as one of the more influential figures in his life. He understood the incredible power of sports!

When we founded the Good Athlete Project, he was one of its founding board members, eager to support the work, and anything his kids were involved in.

He passed away this winter. This spring, at the IHSPLA State Championship for Powerlifting, we honored three deserving athletes within an award that represents his qualities on and off the field:

👉strength
👉loyalty
👉effort
👉kindness

This year‘s honorees are:

🏆Guiseppe Goebel (Powerlifting, Lincoln Way East)
🏆Josh Lemons (Basketball, North Shore Country Day)
🏆Luciano Orta (Powerlifting, New Trier)

Excited to see what these go on to do - the future is bright!

Self-talk refers to the dynamic narrative that is continually occurring between one’s ears. It plays a role in prediction, interpretation, instruction, motivation, communication, and making sense of one’s experience.

Tuning in to this narrative, and working to deliberately cultivate it, plays an important role in performance. Those interested in leadership and character development should work to understand their own self-talk and the language they use to lead, as it will influence the self-talk of those in their charge. The more understanding one has over these principles, the better equipped they will be to match their inner narrative to their performance aims.

This article takes a thorough look at types and tiers of self-talk to support leaders in their meaningful work.
