via • WHAT MAKES DANCE SACRED?
An Anthropology of Sacred Movement
Across cultures, dance has existed far beyond entertainment.
It has accompanied prayer, initiation, mourning, healing, celebration, possession and encounters with the divine.
But movement itself is not inherently sacred.
A gesture can be ordinary in one context and carry profound meaning in another. What changes is the world around it: the place, the rhythm, the people, the intention, the belief, the ritual.
Perhaps sacredness does not live in the movement itself, but in the relationships and meanings created through it.
A body can simply move.
Or movement can become an offering, a prayer, a passage - a way of reaching toward something beyond the individual self.
So what makes a dance sacred: the movement, the meaning, or the belief behind it?

We had such a lovely weekend diving into the body with Kristina Fluty for Experiential Anatomy & Kinesiology!

This was after releasing the shoulders & feeling the connection of the shoulder girdle all the way out into our wing 🪽 span / fingertips. Bodies are so cool 😎

September is here & our cohorts are formed for both AR-DMT & TDC routes. We are so excited to have a curious, dedicated, & talented group of students this year.

Introducing ✨ Mimi Macbeth ✨
Our new TDC Coordinator

Monimia “Mimi” Macbeth (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and Dance/Movement Therapist dedicated to advancing embodied healing through movement, culture, and community.

A lifelong student of African dance and African diasporic movement traditions, she integrates Dance/Movement Therapy, Laban Movement Analysis, trauma-informed care, and restorative practices to create transformative movement experiences that foster connection, self-awareness, and healing.

Mimi has facilitated therapeutic movement groups, mindful practices, and professional trainings across clinical, academic, and community settings. As the founder of Creative Passages PLLC, she blends her passion for the arts, mental health, and culturally responsive practice to support individuals, communities, and helping professionals in reconnecting with the wisdom of the body.
