The Story Behind S & E

Style & Edit is a unique service that helps women feel & become more successful in life through the art of wardrobe confidence + closet & home organization. “In order to act the part you need to dress & live the part,” a quote Stephanie Mandrell & Erin Szott, founders of S&E, strongly believe in. “No matter what it is you do in life, no matter what your career, your vision, or your goals, as women we MUST feel confident in our own skin and surroundings.”

Stephanie & Erin, both mothers of two, know the struggles of trying to balance motherhood with womanhood. “It’s not easy because the women we thought we were all of a sudden shifted and motherhood took over in how we dressed, in how we felt, in how we presented ourselves, in what we believed in, and in what our houses looked like (or no longer looked like). But after getting through & conquering the baby phase, we both realized it was time to put our passion, coupled with years of style & organizational experience, to good use.”

Erin Szott studied Fashion Merchandising and worked for companies like Nordstrom and Banana Republic; her passion always stemming from wanting to help others look & feel their best. On the side, she would often help friends create outfits with clothes they already owned. “As a stylist for Nordstrom, friends would always want to pick my brain for the latest trends. But it ultimately comes down to classic pieces that stand the test of time. Most of us can’t always afford to buy what’s new, so having pieces that will always work combined with a few trendy pieces mixed in is what will give your closet longevity.”

In 2011, Stephanie & Erin met at a mom’s meet-up group but it wasn’t until both of their children started going to the same Chicago Public School in 2015 that they decided to start a business together.

Stephanie Mandrell studied English Education and taught High School English before landing a job with a Real Estate team at Sotheby’s in Chicago. “Style was always important to me. I saw it as more of an art form then anything else and loved coming up with new ways to wear the same pieces in my closet, especially on a teacher’s salary.” That said, her style changed when her career changed, as it often should. “I started paying more attention to how people dressed and how it strongly depicted to the world who they were, even if it really wasn’t. I started realizing that who we are on the inside doesn’t always match who we think we have to be on the outside; but that who we are on the outside is often misleading to who we really are on the inside.” It was also around this time in her life that she started culminating the idea which would eventually become Style & Edit. Style, organization, and home staging was always a part of her life, inspired by her mother and grandmother. “As a Realtor, it was essential that the homes we put on the market looked their best. It was equally as important that I did the same. Luckily, being able to stage a home, organize my business, and dress the part came easy to me.” After the not-so-hard decision to put her Real Estate career on hold to stay home and raise her children, she started to help friends style new looks & organize their closets. “Friends were always complaining about their wardrobes and I was always complimenting those same wardrobes. It became very clear that a new perspective is most times the only thing we need.” And that’s exactly the inspiration behind this business venture.

In the fall of 2015, upon sitting on a park bench in late August, Stephanie & Erin decided it was time to put their creative eye coupled with their passion for helping others achieve success through the art of style & organization to good use. Style & Edit launched in the spring of 2016 and they have since expanded their services to home staging. Home & Life Organization comes next, along with a new member to the S&E team, but that leak has yet to be announced...xo
