None of this is because sitters are bad at the job. It's because going solo means you're also the scheduler, the negotiator, the collections department, and the person who absorbs it when someone treats you badly. That's a lot to carry just to do work you love.

If you've ever pieced together your own sitting gigs, you know how much of the job happens off the clock.

The chasing, the second-guessing, the pit in your stomach when a family bails and your whole day's pay goes with it. That part never shows up in the job description, but it's the part that wears people down.
