Today, Vicki Mikusko (Director of Student Services, Bullock Creek School District), Dr. KaiLonnie Dunsmore (LLN), Sean LaRosa (LLN), and Margaret Doan (Principal at Plymouth Elementary, Midland Public Schools) presented at the Summer Leadership Institute hosted by Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association.
The presentation focused on how principals can strategically implement and align multiple initiatives to boost literacy outcomes without adding more to their already full plates. The session provided practical systems and structures designed to maximize existing resources and ensure sustainability.

Building Capacity for Literacy Teaching and Learning

At LOCI (Literacy Organizational Capacity Initiative), we know students who do not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma than proficient readers—which can have long-term consequences on career prospects, earning potential, and overall quality of life. We also know that for middle and high school students, using reading and writing tools for exploring new ideas in the disciplines can help these students be more engaged in the content.

That’s why we partner with schools and districts at all levels (Pre-K through grade 12) across the country to build internal capacity for high-quality literacy teaching and learning.

LOCI works with schools and districts to build their internal capacity for growth in literacy teaching and learning. Through data-driven strategic planning, we help instructional leadership teams design, implement, monitor and sustain powerful professional learning systems. Our work focuses on developing research-tested literacy strategies and the organizational capacity assets needed to sustain them.
