Our little authors are hard at work this time of year, learning what it means to write narrative stories, small moments from their own lives worth putting on paper. We’re talking a lot about what authors do and how everyone has stories worth telling. We’re also reading and learning about Johnny Appleseed!

In math, we’re adding and subtracting with intention, slowing down to think about why a strategy works, not just getting to an answer. In science, we’re comparing animals and their features, noticing what makes each one different and what they all have in common. In religion, we’re talking about what it means to belong to God’s community and what that looks like as members of the Catholic Church. In reading, we’re building fluency and learning to tell different types of stories apart, using our comprehension skills to dig into the details.

It’s a busy, joyful time in first grade!

Preschool is meeting new friends and learning the routine of school. They are enjoying getting to know one another. Currently, we are learning about apples and exploring the characteristics of apples. We made an apple tree and will be creating pictures by painting with apples. My class loves reading stories. Last week, we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and made a big caterpillar that is displayed in our classroom. They also have enjoyed Pete The Cat stories. We made a Pete the Cat craft as well as colored a picture of rockin' in our new school shoes. We are exploring numbers, shapes and letters. The preschoolers are also learning new songs and prayers. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year!!

PreK4 is off to an amazing start. We are excited to see familiar faces that have returned and moved up to PreK and we are welcoming new students and families to our SRB community this year. We are busy getting to know each other, learning routines, and adapting to the daily schedule. In addition to our class, the students have also begun their art, library, Spanish (pictured), and gym classes. This month we are starting our letter of the week lessons, a unit on apples, and learning about the Bible and God’s stories.
