We experienced another school shooting on 3/27/2023.
We experienced another school shooting giving us reason to question the safety we want to take for granted when we send our children to school each day.
We experienced another school shooting that brings shock, fear, and confusion to our children as they try to process what this means for them. Now, we have to experience the discomfort of connecting with our children on another school shooting.
This is an essential conversation to have, not one to avoid. Your children need you now to speak to affirm them and inform them. Not with perfection, but with honesty in a way that they can understand even when it doesn't make sense.
We encourage you to get uncomfortable. Answer your child's questions. Speak to them about your questions. Cry together. Express confusion together. Talk about ways that will make you feel calm and comfortable as a family/unit/community/other in the midst of inevitable chaos. As parents and leaders, we don't know if this message will provide all that you need.
Also, we can't make sense of what happened in Nashville, but we can provide a necessary start to move forward in a conversation with your children to empower them in a world that doesn't always make sense.
Be brave.
Be uncomfortable.
Be open.
Be okay not having an answer.
TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN TODAY.
Yours candidly,
Khalilah & Veronica
