There are many factors contributing to the development of overweight and obesity. This webinar will introduce an Ericksonian group model for the treatment of weight problems. The presenter will review the Ericksonian characteristics of this group model. This includes the characteristic role of the group coordinator, as well as the universal themes that typically contribute to the onset of overweight and obesity. These universal features are targeted in the group treatment. The typical process of the group therapeutic work will be presented. In this model, therapeutic goals include changing the group members relationship with food and through that their relationship with the world.

Attaining elder status involves both achievement and loss. Autistic adults have often traversed more rugged emotional terrain than non-Autistics (Griffiths, 2019). Life passages such as widowhood cause identity transformation (Zheng, 2024), and this leads to significantly decreased support for those who are already unsteady in their connections. Autistic elders often experience a resurgence of suicidal preoccupation in old age (Stewart, 2022). Researchers acknowledge the need to invite participation by elders while accounting for the heterogeneous nature of the diagnosis and the numerous co-occurring conditions and other issues such as gender variance and diversity in s*xual orientation (Edelson, 2020). In this session, participants will learn to recognize and plan for symptoms of suicidality in Autistic elders, apply principles of supporting widowhood to their work with Autistic clients, and understand how existential therapy techniques could improve depressive symptoms in Autistic elders.

Autism research remains predominantly focused on genetic causes, parental needs, and childhood experiences. As an underserved population, it is no surprise that life becomes more difficult as Autistics report their experiences of later adulthood. Declining health and increased medical symptoms are concerns among Autistics, who are more likely to have chronic concerns (Mason, 2022). However, Autistic adults do not appear to diminish in their cognitive abilities any more than the general population would (Torenvliet, 2023). Some research suggests Autistics find relief and self-acceptance through diagnosis in adulthood, and that this discovery can improve morale in later adulthood (Francis, 2025). In this session, participants will walk away understanding how to apply knowledge of sensory processing sensitivities to identify suitable accommodations for older adults. They’ll be able to describe interview techniques to invite older adults to be forthcoming about loneliness, and will compare methods for encouraging older adults to maintain physical activity.

Due to substantial stigma and historical lack of research at the intersection of mental health and menstrual health, there has been limited dialogue and significant misunderstanding of premenstrual disorders in the healthcare arena. Given the impact on daily functioning and heightened risk of su***de for those living with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, it is imperative that clinicians are equipped with up-to-date knowledge to more effectively and compassionately respond to the needs of patients with a menstrual cycle. This training provides an overview of the current premenstrual disorders landscape, with the aim of learning how to show up as a therapeutic ally to empower cyclical clients. Healthcare professionals will gain insight into the current research, assessment, and evidence based treatment protocols for premenstrual disorders. This program will integrate Cultural Humility model principles (Gottlieb, 2021; Tervalon & Murray-García, 1998) and the shared decision making considerations proposed by the International Association of Premenstrual Disorders (IAPMD A Strategic Plan to Advance Patient-Centered PMDD Research, 2022) to guide practitioners in collaborating with clients amidst the overwhelm often present when navigating premenstrual disorder care. Participants will also reflect on their role in collective care and advocacy efforts, creating systemic ripples of healing that benefit individuals managing mental health difficulties associated with their menstrual cycle.

This workshop focuses on what happens in relationships when partners are out of sync in their erotic lives, whether one partner is kinky and the other is not, or both are kinky in very different ways. Sexual desire discrepancy is one of the most common concerns couples bring to therapy and is strongly linked to distress in both s*xual and relational satisfaction (Dewitte et al., 2020; Rosen et al., 2017; Jodouin et al., 2021). Rather than locating the problem in the partner with less desire or less interest in kink, this program treats desire discrepancy as a relational process shaped by attachment, communication, power, culture, and the meanings each partner assigns to s*x and kink. Grounded in current research on desire discrepancy and relationship satisfaction, the workshop will explore how couples navigate differences in s*xual and affectionate desire over time and what strategies they actually use to manage those gaps in real life (Clark et al., 2024). We will then bring this work into kink specific contexts, including situations where one partner wants to explore kink, the other feels hesitant, or both are kinky in very different ways.

Since Autism was initially identified in the 1940s, the first generational cohort has attained old age. Little research has been produced on healthy or successful aging among Autistics. Autistic adults struggle to cope, suffering from medical issues and experiencing high levels of unemployment/underemployment, with resulting poor quality of life and social isolation (Hwang, 2018). Studies may eventually differentiate those with childhood diagnoses vs. late diagnosis, or other factors which would suggest solutions, however those topics have yet to be explored. A general population model for “aging well” offers one framework for evaluating Health, Cognitive and Physical Functioning, Positive Affect and Coping, and Social Participation (Klein, 2024). To date, the poor QoL seen in middle-aged adults appears consistent across groups, despite differences in age of diagnosis or degree of cognitive difficulties, when present. Due to the aging or death of their parents who may have provided supportive functions, midlife is a time of transition and decreased social connection for many Autistic people. International studies from nations with more robust social services suggest positive responsiveness by Autistic adults who are offered opportunities for supported living, job training and social involvement, with improved QoL (Scheeren, 2021). This program will explain contributors to well-being among middle-aged Autistic adults, describe tactics for supporting Autistics in independent living at midlife, ultimately employing knowledge of adult Autism to describe effective methods for building support networks at midlife.

This workshop walks participants through what is happening “under the hood” during kink play and why that matters for clinical care. Using a brain and body based frame, we look at what lights up during kink, including the limbic system, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus, periaqueductal gray, and anterior cingulate cortex. We explore how these regions work together to shape fear, excitement, safety, memory, and meaning in scenes, and how they help explain why certain experiences can feel intense, comforting, clarifying, or even healing. Building on recent psychobiological research, we examine how consensual B**M scenes can shift stress hormones and pain perception in ways that activate reward and bonding systems and can turn pain into pleasure or deep calm in the right context (Wuyts et al., 2020; Wuyts & Morrens, 2022; Dunkley et al., 2020). The program will also highlight how these states can support trauma processing, embodiment, and integration for some individuals, while at the same time acknowledging that repetitive, high-intensity experiences can mimic compulsive or addictive cycles when not grounded in care, consent, and reflection. Participants will be invited to consider how nervous system concepts are often oversimplified in popular discourse and how a more nuanced understanding of arousal, regulation, and recovery can inform clinical conversations with kink-involved clients. By the end of the session, participants will be better equipped to discuss kink in biologically informed, non pathologizing ways, to differentiate between supportive and harmful patterns of engagement, and to integrate this knowledge into assessment, psychoeducation, and treatment planning.
