This is the first year that USC has called its early application date Early Action, knocking it off a few lists from students who had otherwise applied to a Restrictive Early Action (REA) school. It didn’t seem to stop the applications from coming in, though, with over 40K applying by the early date and another 40K applying by the regular date. This is up over 20% from last year.

Most schools kept test-optional admissions in place this year. But one school that went back to requiring the SAT or ACT was MIT. What happened? Well, they saw a decrease in Early Action applications by almost 20%. Note, however, that applications did not fall all the way to the Class of 2024 levels, which was the application year before the pandemic when test scores were also required. It’s still an increase of 28% since that year, even if it is a far cry from the 62% increase in the first year of pandemic-era test-optional admissions.

For those who want the best of both worlds, the 4+1 program is a great option. Yes, it takes one additional year to achieve (which you spend at Penn), but you also get an Ivy League degree out of the deal. Of course, going to a top-tier liberal arts school like Haverford can lead to many graduation options!

It can be enticing to drop Spanish IV to take an extra science class as a senior. And while it will look good to take AP Biology and AP Chemistry in the same year, don’t do so if it means you need to drop another core class. The top colleges want to see you’ve spent your high school years being well-prepared for a liberal arts curriculum.
