Special needs moms, we all have stories. Here’s one for you.
Our very fancy pediatrician, in a very fancy practice in downtown Chicago, once asked me if I’d tried rocking my screaming baby.
Jack didn’t cry for days or weeks. It was months. It was years. It was always. No naps, no nights, no breaks. The neighbors upstairs told us all they heard through their floor, all day, every day, was my baby crying.
We tried everything. Everyone had a theory. He’s hungry. Let him cry it out. You’re holding him too much.
Then our fancy doctor, in her fancy office, asked if I’d tried rocking him.
What the F.
I just went home and cried. And kept measuring Jack’s head, because it wasn’t growing and I already knew that mattered, even if no one would say it out loud.
I was right to worry. But instead of listening, she suggested rocking. Jack wasn’t a typical ear infection or wellness check.
I walked into that visit already freaked out, and walked out feeling worse. Did I try rocking him?
WTH.
So there it is. That’s one of 8 billion stories that special needs moms like us have. I can’t wait to hear yours.
If a doctor has ever brushed off your gut instinct as a caregiver, tell me I’m not the only one.
