Try this STEAM activity at home!

Winter’s chill lingers, so this week, we embraced it by diving into the fascinating world of Arctic animals.

This weekend, embark on a fun STEAM adventure.

Fill an ice cube tray with adorable animal figurines and water. Ask your child how many animals they have and where they should place the tray to create an Arctic-like environment for them.

After freezing the animals for a few hours, transfer the cubes to a new tray. Challenge your child to figure out how they can melt the tray.

Science: Explore the science behind melting ice quickly.

Tools: Gather some tweezers and eye droppers.

Engineering: Design habitats for the rescued animals.

Art: Unleash your creativity and decorate the habitats.

Math: Sort the animals based on their colors, habitats (land or water), or other interesting criteria.

This week we learned about the traditions of Lunar New Year through STEAM.

The children drew pictures of the moon phases as we talked about how the holiday was celebrated for 15 days the moon phases. They also played in moon sand(Science).
Chopsticks were used to make inequalities in math and they even pairings with them.
(Technology) The children thought about creative ways to trap a dragon(Engineering)
Used a gold coin sensory bin to talk about even and odd numbers and how even numbers can be divided equally. (math)
For art they were able to be creative and make animals to represent zodiac animals with clay during loose parts center.

Gingerbread Cookies

To learn a bit more about STEAM students made their own gingerbread cookies. They learn about the Science of Baking and what happens when they mix all the ingredients together. Technology was represented as the mixer, rollers and cookie cutter. Engineering and Art was when they got to decorate using icing and candy. They used math when they were measuring all the ingredients.

This week our daycare community had so much fun on an apple picking field trip to All Seasons!
It was such a great opportunity for our families to engage in one of fall units and share a common experience.

Fall into STEAM with Apples! 🍎🍏

Disect an apple and have fun taking apart all of the different parts (Science) with a fruit peeler, tweezers, or tooth picks (Technology). After you disect and take a look at the parts of an apple, build apple towers with apple pieces and toothpicks (Engineering). Create apple stamps with parts of an apple and a fork. Allow children to mix yellow and red paint to see what other color they can make (Art & Science). When building towers talk about shapes with your children. Draw different shapes and experiment with what shapes make the best apples (Math).

What does math look like in early childhood? Understanding math in the foundational years are understanding 1-10, use relationships of how big and how small things are, use spatial awareness like under and over, and naming shapes.

Let’s look at baking one more time!

Infants ( 3 months - 12 months) can use measuring cups to see how big and small they are and how they stack on top or below.

Pre-Toddlers ( 1 year old - 2 year old) in addition to stacking measuring cups pretoddlers can scoop and measure ingredients. Also they can roll out play dough and cut out shapes. Give them a challenge to make three shapes.

Toddlers ( 2 year old - 3 year old) can measure ingredients and compare the size of measuring cups. As they are scooping the dough they can count the number of cookies and cupcakes.

Pre-K ( 3 year old - 4 year old) can make the recipe with the correct measuring cups.

School Age (Kindergarten -2nd Grade ) can see that two half cups equal one cup and three one third cups equal one cup. Also they can see that twelve cupcake molds in a pan equal a dozen and they can skip count by 2s as they fill the cupcake pans.

What does Art look like in Early Childhood Education? Art is a way for young children to express themselves and explore different types of material.

Let’s take a look at how Art fits into baking!

Infants (4 months- 11 months) make play dough and explore the dough with tools to roll out and cut it out.

Pre-Toddlers (12 months -23 months) use playdough to make different creations like a face. Children can also mix colors to see what new colors they can make.

Toddlers (2 - 3 year olds) make sugar cookies, roll them out and cut in shapes. After the cookies are baked decorate the different cookies with frosting and sprinkles.

Preschoolers ( 3-4 year olds) can roll and cut out cookie dough with rolling cutters and make their own shapes. After they can decorate with two different color icing and mix and make swirl frosting.
