Important federal legislation in the works…🤞🤞❤️❤️
Currently many students with dyslexia do not qualify for extra support because dyslexia is not its own separate disability.
Dyslexia is lumped in with “specific learning disability” and many students on the medium to high end of the dyslexia spectrum are too high to qualify under a specific learning disability.
These dyslexic students still suffer a great emotional toll due to their academic struggles, but they do not qualify for any extra support. These are the children that fall through the cracks in our education system.
These are the students I fight for!! 🙋♀️
Passing this legislation would be a fantastic step in the right direction. ❤️❤️
Here is a blurb from the article… ⬇️⬇️⬇️
The proposed legislation would reclassify dyslexia into its own category. It defines dyslexia as “an unexpected difficulty in reading for an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader, most commonly caused by a difficulty in the phonological processing (the appreciation of the individual sounds of spoken language), which affects the ability of an individual to speak, read, and spell.”
In Thursday’s session, Cassidy argued that separating dyslexia in this way could make it easier for kids to receive the support services they need from schools.
“We have done this for autism, and it has made a difference for autism,” he said. “It has increased screening, identification, and the number of students receiving appropriate accommodations if they have autism.”
A Senate committee also passed a proposal to classify dyslexia separately under federal disability law.
