From immigrating to the U.S. alone at the age of 17 to earning one of the nation’s highest honors, CECS proudly celebrates alumnus Hamid Andalib, who recently received the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor, an award recognizing leaders who embody the American dream through achievement, service, and dedication to community.
After earning his electrical engineering degree in 1985, Andalib built a successful entrepreneurial career and has remained deeply committed to giving back, supporting the Chattanooga community through mentorship, philanthropy, and service.
“I came to America to become an American,” Andalib said. “This country gave me opportunity, but it also gave me responsibility. You add value. You help make things better for the next generation.”
His journey is a powerful reflection of the resilience, determination, and community impact at the heart of CECS.

Most people would guess the duration of graduation ceremony and move on. Dean Yelamarthi guessed it exactly, wore the honorary clock to commencement, and casually reminded everyone that time is more of a suggestion at UTC.
Dean of CECS. Master of minutes.
Very "Doctor Strange" behavior—clearly reviewed all 31415926535 outcomes and chose maximum professor energy (the outfit). Understood the assignment. ⏱️

Fresh off earning his M.S. in Computer Science: Cybersecurity, Noah stepped to center stage and sang the alma mater, marking his graduation with a moment that blended achievement and artistry.
Less than 24 hours later, he boarded a plane to join the UTC Chamber Singers on an international tour across Ireland. 🇮🇪
Noah’s UTC journey is packed with standout accomplishments: the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service, NASA internships, cybersecurity outreach and mentoring, and a deep commitment to music that shaped his entire student experience.
He’s a reminder that excellence doesn’t have to choose one lane.

This is what women leading the way looks like! We were honored to have Janet Rehberg, PMP, CEM, President and CEO‑elect of EPB, serve as our Spring 2026 Commencement speaker.
Janet shared how her father once dreamed of becoming an engineer. Drafted into the military and later immigrating to the United States, he set that dream aside but never his belief in opportunity or in his daughter. Janet honored her father’s dream by majoring in electrical engineering, turning sacrifice into legacy.
Today, Janet helps shape the future at EPB, leading an organization that pushes the boundaries of energy, fiber optics, and quantum technologies to strengthen our community and expand opportunity.
Her message to the The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Class of 2026 centered on three powerful leadership lessons:
1️⃣ Leadership is service: Leadership isn’t about titles. It’s about responsibility, especially in hard moments. The most meaningful work improves someone else’s life.
2️⃣ Success is a team sport: When you climb, bring someone with you. Success isn’t how high you rise, but how many rise alongside you.
3️⃣ Stay curious: Change is accelerating. The future belongs to those who ask new questions, challenge old assumptions, and solve problems once thought impossible.

Happy Mother’s Day to the incredible mothers of engineers and computer scientists—and to the mothers who are engineers and computer scientists themselves.
To the moms who encouraged curiosity, listened to countless “why” questions, celebrated hard-earned graduations, and supported late-night debugging sessions—you helped build the minds shaping our future.
And to the mothers who are currently studying, recently graduated, or balancing motherhood while pursuing careers in engineering and computer science: your determination, resilience, and brilliance inspire more than you know. You are redefining what’s possible for the next generation.
Today, we celebrate all of you—past, present, and future builders of innovation. Thank you for the love, strength, and vision you bring to the world. 💐
