I met Grandmaster Ji in 2016 when I visited South Korea. As the "doju" or founder of the way of Hapkido, he was recognized by almost every kwan, including our own. The gold belt he wears was given to him by Bruce Lee for Game of Death, a movie in which he appeared as one of Bruce's challenges in the final tower, and he adopted it for his real life career and kept it.

Student of Choi Yong Sool, who first brought Aiki-jujutsu to Korea, Ji Han Jae was the first to coin the art "Hapkido," and to teach it with the addition of kicks, which he is said to have recovered from Korean Buddhist temples.

WHEN TOOLS FAIL, SKILLS PREVAIL We take a lot of heat from some individuals that say we are anti-tool. We’re not anti-tool, but we are pro officers possessing solid, foundational hands-on skills. When a tool is deployed and it has the desired result that’s great, but if the tool fails, officers need to have solid hands-on skills to prevent the situation from escalating to a higher level of force. Some situations might even come to a quicker resolution if solid control to apprehension tactics are utilized from the start. Officers should have tools at their disposal that assists them in carrying out their duties, but even when a tool works, it’s not the tool that puts the suspect into handcuffs. To truly be effective, officers must have a foundation in solid hands-on control skills. 12/09/2025
