A case for place cards (and thoughtful seating at the dinner table)

Welcome back to Mannerly Monday where we cover one modern etiquette tip each week.

Great gatherings are built on thoughtfulness. One of my favorite small detail when hosting is plan seating arrangements and ‘reserve’ everyone’s place at the table with a place card. It’s so simple, but it can show each guest they are meant to be ‘here’ AND thoughtful seating can help the flow of conversation at the table. A few thoughts on seating arrangements - I never seat couples together. I like to place the host at the head of the table. Traditionally, the guest of honor is to the right of the host.

Old-School Manners We Are Still Teaching In 2025

Hold doors open for others. Both boys and girls can share the virtues of kindness and service.

Wait to speak instead of interrupting. Self-control and dignity go hand in hand

Thank you notes (in ink!) are heartfelt expressions of gratitude. Skip the text. Pick up your pen.

Offer your seat to someone - notice the needs of others.

No electronics at the table. Do not miss moments of true connection.

Help clean up without being asked. True etiquette shows up in humble service.

Confidently introduce yourself and friends to one another. It is inclusive and communicates respect.

Eye contact during conversation. Screens have trained us to look down.

We agree manners (still) matter. Let’s raise the next generation of kind, confident kids who share honor and respect with others.
