Graduate business students just got back from Costa Rica for this year's McColl International Experience with Dr. Oscar Barzuna, which included multiple company visits and cultural experiences.

An MSTOD student who went on the trip shared, "Traveling to Costa Rica with Queens University of Charlotte’s McColl School of Business was a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience. I was able to see firsthand how culture translates into business decisions, and how those decisions can make a global impact. In a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected cross-culturally, this was a truly invaluable experience.

I am not only grateful for the hands-on opportunity to learn about international business, but also the opportunities to network with global business executives and make deeper connections with my classmates and faculty."

Master of Science in Talent & Organization Development alumna Mona Nigam has many quotes she lives by. "You must be the change you wish to see in the world,” by Mahatma Gandhi, "Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it," by Charles R. Swindoll and "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream," by C.S. Lewis are just a few of the quotes that inspire Mona. However, these quotes don’t just inspire Mona. They invoke action.

For over 20 years Mona was a co-founder and partner at a technology company before exiting the business three years ago. Determined to grow and change, Mona went to Queens University of Charlotte to pursue her master’s degree and earn an executive coaching certificate. After finishing in December of 2023, Mona started another company. Her new company, EdgeUp Partners, focuses on development and helps people excel and organizations thrive.

Mona’s background partially contributes to her dedication to people. Originally from India, Mona has had so many diverse experiences as a member of the AAPI community. At Queens, she always felt the university fostered a welcoming and inclusive environment and she wants to maintain that commitment as she now serves on the MSTOD Board. She recognizes a lot has been done, but there is still a lot to be done to bridge the gap in social identities. By being a service-oriented leader in her community, Mona is being the change she wishes to see in the world.

The sky’s the limit. New McColl School of Business alum, Kirk Ho has taken this saying literally. Kirk just finished his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and is now studying to become a pilot. Kirk, originally from Vietnam, has a thirst for adventure and he jokes that his future as a pilot will allow him to be paid to see the world. Adventure is nothing new to Kirk though. Attending school in another country while learning a new language and culture helped Kirk’s passion for the unknown flourish.

While at Queens University of Charlotte, Kirk always felt supported by his peers, faculty, and staff. He fondly reflects how, due to the smaller class sizes, professors knew who he was and even remembered his name years after taking the class. He also boasts about the value of his education in the McColl School of Business. He recalls that in a Marketing class he took he did a project for Ally Financial and was able to speak with corporate leaders. “We learned from projects and real-life current scenarios, not just textbooks,” he said.

Kirk’s heritage and experience at Queens has also reinforced his values of ethics and integrity. “My grandmother always said ‘when a tiger dies, it leaves its skin. When you die, you leave your name.’ Doing right is the most important thing because you can’t take money or possessions with you when it is time to go.”
