Celebrating MeckDec Day—today, May 20th! It’s the 251st Anniversary of Signing the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in the Old Courthouse at “The Square”—corner of Trade & Tryon Streets—in Uptown Charlotte, NC.

The top image is an AI rendering of two of my ancestors who signed the MeckDec with their pastor who was instrumental in preaching liberty at the Scots-Irish Presbyterian Churches in the backcountry in the mid-1700’s.

My book, co-authored with Sarah Sue Hardinger and published last year in honor of the 250th MeckDec Anniversary, continues to be available on Amazon for only $20. It updates after nearly 75 years the biographies of the MeckDec Signers. Here is the link to purchase:

Inspired by Paul Revere’s Ride in Boston April 18, 1775, and buoyed by the subsequent Battles of Lexington & Concord in the Massachusetts Colony, Civic Leaders across Mecklenburg in the North Carolina Colony came together on May 19-20, 1775, at a Convention held in the Old Court House in Charlotte, to join in the patriotic revolution sweeping the American Colonies.

There, they crafted and signed the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, more than a year before the one adopted and published in Philadelphia, which we celebrate as our nation’s founding on July 4, 1776. So in this year of 2025—the 250th Anniversary of the MeckDec—join in festivities marking both our local and national heritage, as we remember this key moment in American history!
