Sometimes, knowing what comes next can make a big difference. đź’™

A First/Then board is a simple visual support that shows a child what is happening first and what will happen next.

For example:
🏫 First: School
🧸 Then: Play

Visual supports like this can help make routines and expectations easier to understand while supporting skills like transitioning between activities and building independence. 🌱

And they aren’t just for therapy! First/Then visuals can be used during everyday routines at home, at school, and in the community.

Simple tools can create meaningful support.

At Flywheel, it creates opportunities for children to learn, connect, and practice meaningful skills alongside their peers.

From songs and stories to weather, letters, colors, and counting, Circle Time can support skills like:

đź’¬ Communication

🤝 Group participation & social skills

🌱 Independence & everyday skills

And because every child is different, the skills practiced during Circle Time can be tailored to their individual goals and needs.

It may look like a simple group activity, but there’s a lot of learning happening behind the scenes!

The world can feel a little different for every child. đź’™

For some children, everyday sensory input may feel more intense, less noticeable, or simply different.

Sensory differences might look like:

đź‘‚ Covering ears around loud sounds
đź‘• Avoiding certain textures
đź’ˇ Feeling uncomfortable around bright lights
🌀 Seeking movement, jumping, or spinning
🍽️ Preferring certain food textures
🤗 Seeking or avoiding certain types of touch

When a child seems overwhelmed, it can help to get curious about what they may be experiencing, not just what we can see.

Small supports like reducing unnecessary noise, preparing for transitions, offering breaks, or providing access to preferred sensory tools can make a difference.

Because sensory support isn't one-size-fits-all. Understanding the individual child is key. 🌱

Feedback like this means so much to our team. đź’™

Watching children grow, build new skills, and feel excited to come to therapy is why we do what we do.

We’re especially grateful for the families who trust us to be part of their child’s journey and for the BCBAs and therapists who bring so much care, compassion, and dedication each day.

Thank you for sharing your experience and for being part of the Flywheel family!

Play can look simple, but there’s often so much happening beneath the surface. 💙

Sensory play can create natural opportunities to practice skills like:

âś‹ Fine motor skills through scooping, pouring, grasping, and manipulating objects

đź‘€ Attention & exploration while discovering different materials and textures

💬 Communication by requesting items, making choices, or describing what they’re doing

🧠 Problem-solving through experimenting and figuring out how things work

🌱 Independence by making choices and engaging with activities in their own way

The best part? These skills can be practiced through experiences that feel engaging, meaningful, and fun.

That’s what we mean by play with a purpose.

Transitions are a part of everyday life, but for some children, moving from one activity, place, or routine to another can feel especially challenging.

Stopping a preferred activity, not knowing what comes next, shifting attention, or experiencing a change in environment can all play a role.

The good news? Transitions are a skill that can be supported and practiced.

Strategies like visual schedules, countdowns, First/Then language, and clear expectations can help create more predictability and prepare children for what’s coming next.

Every child is different, so finding the strategies that work best for them may take time.

Ending summer with a whole lot of fun! 🎪

Our Union center celebrated the end of the season with an End-of-Summer Carnival filled with carnival games, face painting, sweet treats, and plenty of smiles!

Events like these give our children opportunities to play, explore, connect, and practice skills in fun and engaging ways, while making some pretty great memories along the way.

What a fun way to say goodbye to summer and get ready for all that's ahead!
