BFB Foundation

BFB Foundation Strengthening developing communities in Guatemala through education scholarships for girls and women.

The BFB Foundation’s goal is to educate and empower women through financial education. We believe that a woman who understands how to use, save, and invest her money wisely will have a great impact on her family and her community. One woman can positively alter the outcomes of generations to follow. Women perform over half of the world’s work, produce half of the world’s food and yet they represen

t 70 percent of the world’s poor. Any solution that would alleviate these issues must involve those that are most directly affected. The BFB Foundation believes social and financial education is essential in helping women end the cycle of poverty for their families and their communities. The BFB Foundation has begun its efforts by reaching out to education-oriented organizations in Guatemala, which is the most populous country in Central America. It is a country in transition, and a country reaching out to connect with the world. Since its 36-year-long civil war ended in 1996, the Guatemalan government and people have been working toward a greater presence in the world economy. Yet despite advances in that direction, more than half of the population lives below the national poverty line, and 13 percent of the population lives in extreme poverty. Among Guatemala’s indigenous groups, which make up 38 percent of the population, those numbers climb even higher with 73 percent living below the poverty line and 28 percent living in extreme poverty.

Some lessons don’t happen in a classroom. Day two of the reunion brought sack races across the lawn, puzzles built shoulder to shoulder around a tree stump — a map of Guatemala, then the solar system — and an afternoon spent painting canvas bags, each one turning into a picture of who these young women are becoming. A desk with three monitors and a cat curled up beside it. Flowers growing around the words reaching goals. Every one of them is building something bigger than herself, and days like this are a reminder that no one does it alone. 💚

Today we left Antigua’s cobblestones behind and headed west toward Lake Atitlán.

We stopped at Iximche along the way — the ancient Kaqchikel capital, where the ceremonial plazas and offerings still in place remind you that this history isn’t past tense. It’s living.

Guatemala keeps teaching us. That’s part of why we’re here.

Last night the 2026 Reunion began the way the best ones do — around a table.

We shared a meal with the girls, broken into small groups so there was room for real conversation. The kind where you hear about their family life, a hard semester, a plan for next year. Then we moved into the auditorium, and one by one, many of them stood up and told their stories.

I don’t know how to describe what that room felt like. Determination, mostly. And a lot of joy.

These young women are studying, working, leading, and building lives that will change what’s possible for the people around them. We are so proud of every single one of them.

A special thank you to Misha, who organizes this reunion year after year and makes nights like last night possible.

Back in Guatemala. 🇬🇹

Last night, several BFB Foundation board members and special guests gathered around one long table — good food, better company, and a whole lot of anticipation.

Tonight we see the girls.

Every one of these young women is writing a story that started with someone believing in her. Watching them step into their futures never gets old.

More soon from the reunion. ❤️

The Bigger Picture

One Girl.
One Scholarship.
Unlimited Possibilities.

Lourdes' story is not just about one student. It represents what happens every time someone chooses to invest in a girl's education.

When you educate one girl...

She strengthens her family.
She inspires her community.
She becomes a leader.
She changes the future.

At the BFB Foundation, we've already helped more than 100 young women pursue higher education. But there are many more waiting. Together, we can help the next Lourdes discover her potential.

Join us in empowering the next generation of women in STEM.

Lourdes' Reflection

"This program strengthened my understanding of the engineering career I hope to pursue in the future."

Those are Lourdes' own words after completing the program. Throughout the experience she learned:
✔ Engineering solves real-world problems.
✔ Teamwork creates innovation.
✔ Failure leads to better designs.
✔ Women belong in engineering.

Most importantly...She left believing she can become one. That is the power of opportunity.

Looking Toward Space

From Guatemala...to Space

One day during the program, Lourdes studied Guatemala's first satellite, Quetzal-1. She even helped build a model satellite while learning about aerospace engineering.

Can you imagine what a girl begins to believe after holding a model of a satellite designed by students from her own country? Dreams suddenly become attainable. Every girl deserves the chance to see what is possible.

The next great engineer might simply be waiting for someone to believe in her.

Engineering for Good

Engineering Can Change Communities

One of Lourdes' favorite experiences focused on renewable energy. She learned how hydroelectric power and wind energy can provide electricity while protecting the environment.

Then she built:
💧 A water-saving fountain
🌬️ A working wind turbine

She discovered that engineering isn't only about machines...It's about improving lives. The engineers of tomorrow will help solve today's biggest challenges.

We're proud to help girls become part of that future.

Creating with Technology

Learning by Doing

Imagine designing something on a computer......and then watching it come to life on a 3D printer! That is exactly what Lourdes experienced.

She learned how to:
• Design using engineering software
• Create 3D models
• Think like an engineer
• Turn ideas into reality

Engineering isn't simply about math.

It's about creativity.

Problem solving.

Innovation.

The future belongs to young people who learn to create solutions. The BFB Foundation is proud to help girls gain access to opportunities like these.

If She Can, I Can

One Story Can Change a Life

On her very first day, Lourdes met one of the engineers who helped develop Quetzal-1, Guatemala's first satellite launched into space.

Even more inspiring...While she was still a university student, this engineer had the opportunity to visit NASA. Years later she returned—not as a student—but as a mentor.

Her message to the girls was simple: "Nothing is impossible if you are determined to achieve your goals."

Those words stayed with Lourdes. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give a young woman isn't just an education...It's someone who helps her believe she belongs.

Every scholarship creates new role models for the next generation.
