Hello Southwest Middle School families!

This is Dr. Davria with this week’s information and updates.

First, a reminder that there is no school this Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. We hope our students and families enjoy the long weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday.

I also want to remind families that Wednesday, September 16, is a mandated professional development day for all Gaston County Schools teachers and staff. There will be no school for students on September 16.

We are approaching the midpoint of our first nine weeks, which means it is a great time to check in on your student’s grades, attendance, and overall progress.

This year, interim reports and report cards will not be printed and sent home. Instead, all families have real-time access to grades and attendance through Infinite Campus. If you have not yet set up your Infinite Campus parent access, I strongly encourage you to do so. Please follow the instructions provided at https://www.gaston.k12.nc.us/for-parents/infinite-campus

We have a busy home athletic schedule this week! Our girls softball team plays at home on Tuesday and Thursday, and our football team plays at home on Wednesday. Our golf team also has a match on Tuesday. We hope you'll come out and support our Roadrunners!

Finally, parents and families, save the date for our Beginning of the Year Block Party! The event will be held on Monday, September 28, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. We are excited to bring our Roadrunner families and school community together. More information will be coming soon, so mark your calendars!

Please remember all safety reminders for arrival and drop-off. I thank you for your continued partnership and support.

🚧🚧CAUTION🚧🚧 Students at Work!

Check out Ms. Malhotra's 6th-grade students working on their PLTW Design & Modeling project. Students are designing and building an Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO), a device that helps support the foot and ankle.

Through this hands-on project, students are learning to identify a problem, develop ideas, build and test a prototype, and make improvements. The project helps them understand the Engineering Design Process while developing creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.

Please remember that all car riders must be picked up by 3:45 PM. Our staff members have other obligations after school and are unable to provide supervision beyond this time.

If you are unable to arrive by 3:45 PM, please consider using the school bus as an alternative transportation option.

Good Evening Southwest Middle School families!

This is Dr. Davria with this week’s information and updates.

We are continuing to settle into our routines and procedures, and I want to thank our students and families for the great work you are doing. Our students’ positive behavior allows us to keep our focus where it belongs — on learning and academics. Please continue to encourage your student to make good choices, follow our expectations, and come to school ready to learn each day.

We have another busy week of Roadrunner athletics!

Our golf team has a match on Monday, our football team travels to Belmont on Wednesday, and our girls softball team travels to Holbrook on Thursday. We hope you’ll come out and support our student-athletes!

Finally, a few important reminders about arrival and dismissal.

Students should not be dropped off before 8:00 a.m. For car riders, please use the designated car-rider line in front of the school, stay in the line, and pull all the way forward. Please do not park or stop elsewhere on campus to drop off your student.

For our walkers, please remind students to stay on the sidewalks and use designated crosswalks. Students should never cut through the parking lot.

And for all drivers, please be patient and attentive as you enter and leave campus. Watch carefully for student walkers, buses, and other vehicles, and follow the directions of our staff during arrival and dismissal.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for helping us make Southwest Middle School a safe, positive, and focused place for our students.
