Funny story.

A few days ago, we set out with intentions to organize the playroom and the girls found their apron and chef hat and wanted to bake - naturally.

“First we organize, then we bake” I told them. (My fellow teachers - you know this first, then language)

we made muffins and the girls wanted to practice putting them in the oven so I was holding Ava’s pan with her and when she felt the heat, she literally THREW the muffin pan at the open oven.

Batter went everywhere.

She looked up at me and said, “baking is ruined”.

But it wasn’t ruined. Though it may have felt like it her little heart.

I gently reminded her that the moment it happened may not have felt good, but the whole experience wasn’t ruined. We tasted batter, learned to measure, worked as a team, and learned what oven heat feels like 😂

Here’s my picture to prove it. Those smiles are quite the opposite of ruin. ❤️

We are in summer mode 100% ☀️

Which can be tricky when responsibility is knocking at the door. We play until late at night and the next day comes FAST. Can you relate?

As excited as I am, I know what happens to me when I’m not getting enough rest or down time... overstimulation which leads to fussiness. I’m basically a newborn 😉

So, as much as we love to expand into the world and play this time of year. I’m recognizing when we need to withdraw and watch some tv + stay inside for puzzles.

Motherhood interrupted my life.

Hear me out. Interrupted has a negative connotation, but I’m meaning in the way that the weather broadcaster says “we interrupt this regularly scheduled program to share something important with you”.

You see, I was doing my thing *very* confidently and comfortably.

However, twins shook my world. I lost most of my confidence and prior comforts in the beginning months of motherhood.

Hayden and Ava interrupted my regularly scheduled way of life to teach me important things...

•my confidence is in the Lord
•my identity is found in the Lord
•ordinary living is actually quite extraordinary
•community isn’t optional

I’m eternally grateful for the interruption. I’m forever changed. Happy Mother’s Day!

Twin love and a thought... 👇🏼

Transitioning from the classroom to stay at home mom meant my girls became my students. 👏🏼

Positive behavior support - became positive parenting. ✔️

Functional behavior assessments - became analyzation of behavior patterns in our home. 💭

Written Antecedent, behavior, consequence charts - became mental notes of my daughters’ ABC. 📝

The desire to empower my students to become everything they dreamed of - became the desire to empower my daughters. 💕

You see, parenting often feels like teaching to me. There’s a need for mutual respect, trust, and connection that come before all else. Before the math, reading, writing, science, etc.

Our expectations have been different at each developmental stage; cribs, toddler bed, bunk bed, etc. Each time Ethan and I have chatted about what we think a reasonable expectation for Ava and Hayden is. ⁣
⁣
For example... we expect the girls to talk quietly once we have tucked them in for the night. For us, no talking does not seem reasonable. Quiet voices seems like a fair expectation.⁣

Rest is a priority in our home. 🏡 ⁣

It was so tricky when our twins dropped their nap because we knew that they truly weren’t ready to grind from 7 am to 7 pm. And really who is? ⁣
⁣
It became so important for us to establish a mid-day rest time. Rest is not a punishment, friends. Rest is a priority. ✔️ ⁣
⁣
Here’s what we did and still do:⁣
•read Rest Time social story⁣
•set rest time for 50 minutes ⁣
•used a visual timer ⁣
•clear expectations ⁣
⁣
Our girls are separated for rest time. They are allowed to read, do puzzles, play with quiet activities, and create. And that they do! ⁣
⁣
At (almost) four, the girls create and build and imagine and proudly show me after rest time ends. It is amazing to see what their brains come up with when they are alone for a little while. ⁣
