It’s always helpful to review the proper way to do things…
Reach Back Skills Development
We are a non-profit organization that offers carpentry skills development programs to men and women ages 15-35.
There’s a difference between being trained… and being taught.
Training tells you what to do.
Teaching shows you why you’re doing it.
Our students are taught how to solve problems.
Taught how to communicate.
Taught how to think through challenges.
Because when conditions change — and they always do —
a trained worker waits for instructions.
A taught worker adjusts.
Clean logic. Clear thinking. Strong foundation.
That’s the difference.

This young man believes now, and more importantly he trust the process.
At the end of the day he said “ Mr. D, I wanna build me a house”
Yeah young fella you see how easy it is, let that be your focus.

A lot of people think the hard part of carpentry is running a drill or cutting boards.
Truth is… that’s the easy part.
The real challenge for many is:
✔️ Soft Skills (communication, punctuality, leadership)
✔️ Construction Math
✔️ Tool & Material Identification
✔️ Safety Awareness
✔️ Knowing why you’re doing what you’re doing
That’s where careers are built.
At Reach Back Skills Development Inc., our Online Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship teaches the foundation before you ever step on a jobsite.
Learning a trade starts in the classroom.

• The soft skills to communicate and problem-solve
That’s what we teach in our Online Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Program.

🧠 CARPENTRY IS MORE THAN CUTTING WOOD
Most people can be taught how to:
• Cut a board
• Hold the other end
• Drive a screw or swing a hammer
That’s not the hard part.
What we teach in our ONLINE Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Program is something deeper:
How to think. How to plan. How to solve problems.
📸 Scenario:
In this photo, there is a stack of 8-foot 2×4s.
The foreman tells you and your partner to move them to the work area.
You say:
👉 “I’ll take 5 boards, you take 5 boards.”
Question:
Based on the amount shown in this picture…
🧠 How many trips will it take to move them all?
No saws.
No nails.
No measuring tape.
Just:
• Observation
• Counting
• Teamwork
• Planning
That’s real carpentry thinking — and yes, it can be taught online.

Our ONLINE Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Program is built around real jobsite scenarios like this—so students can understand the work before stepping onto a jobsite.

Carpentry Isn’t Just About Building New — It’s About Fixing What Was Done Wrong.
This job is a perfect example of why skilled carpenters are always needed.
We’re replacing rotted deck rail boards and removing siding to properly install J-channel around a leaking door. Water intrusion damaged the flooring inside — repairs we already completed — but the real issue was outside.
That’s the reality of this trade.
Homes and buildings don’t just need to be built…
They need to be maintained, repaired, corrected, and protected.
This is what we teach in our Online Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Program:
• How water gets into buildings
• Why flashing, J-channel, and siding details matter
• How poor installation today becomes expensive damage tomorrow
• Why repair work is just as important as new construction
Carpentry is a career, not a job.
There will always be work — because buildings age, materials fail, and shortcuts get exposed.
If you’re looking for a trade where your skills matter, where you can work with your hands and your mind, and where the demand isn’t going anywhere — carpentry is it.
Everyone has skills.
We help develop them.
