Okay, we've been thinking about this one.

Here's the scenario: Someone offers your bowler $1,000 to bowl a 300 game. Not eventually.
Not when they're ready.
Right now. This week.
No preparation time, just an opportunity with a price tag attached.

Now, here's the real question: Would your bowler take it?

Because if they would, that tells us something. It tells us that external reward might override what they actually want for themselves.
And sometimes that works β€” adrenaline is real, money is real, motivation is real.

But if they wouldn't? That tells us something different. It tells us they understand that their 300 game needs to happen on their terms. That ownership matters more than the cash (or external reward). That they'd rather earn it for them. Earn it for the sake of earning this prestigious bowling achievement.

Here's the thing: both answers are honest. Both matter. Both reveal something true about how they approach pressure, opportunity, and what they actually value.

So today we're asking:
Would your bowler take the $1,000 deal right now, or would they rather wait for their perfect game to come naturally?

Let us know below in the comments. And if you want to go deeper β€” ask them; listen to their reasoning. Enjoy this fun conversation starter.

Tip Tuesday: The three questions that get a stuck bowler unstuck.

You've seen it happen. Something goes sideways on the lanes and you can watch the shift happen in real time β€” shoulders tense up, feet start to move faster, routines go by the wayside, and suddenly your bowler isn't competing anymore. They're just surviving the rest of the game.

And every instinct in your body says fix it.
Tell them what you saw.
Offer the adjustment.
Say something encouraging.
Say anything.

That instinct isn't wrong. It comes from love. But in that exact moment, most fixes land as pressure β€” because your bowler's brain has already flipped into judgment mode.
Why do I always do this.
I should be better than this.
And nothing you say gets through a closed loop.

Here's the reframe we teach: failure isn't linear. It's iterative.

It's not a straight line from bad to good. It's a loop you run β€” try, learn, adjust, run it again. Every athlete who's ever gotten good at anything has run that loop hundreds of times. The bowlers who struggle aren't the ones who fail. They're the ones who stop looping and start judging.

So instead of handing them an answer, hand them a question. These three:
πŸ” "I wonder…" β€” opens the door. I wonder what adjustments you could make to help the ball enter the pins differently?
πŸ” "What if…" β€” creates possibility. What if you tried adjusting your speed or hand position?
πŸ” "Let's try…" β€” turns it into action. Let's try it for two frames and see what you notice then.

Notice what these questions do NOT do. They don't diagnose. They don't correct. They don't carry a hidden expectation.

They just reopen the loop.

And here's the part that matters most: when you ask instead of tell, you're communicating something bigger than a swing thought. You're saying I trust you to figure this out. That message does more for a competitor's confidence than any adjustment ever will.

(Also, full transparency β€” the hardest part of this is not answering your own question. We know. We're working on it too. πŸ˜…)

πŸ’¬ Which question feels most natural for you to use β€” and which one feels like it'd take some practice? Tell us in the comments.

There's a name for what this graph shows.

In business it's called creative destruction β€” you tear down something that works well enough in order to build something that works better. On the way, it looks like a loss.

Your bowler goes through the same thing.

That drop isn't them getting worse. It's them stepping out of what was comfortable and finally investing in the training they've been given. That's the "not yet" zone. It's the bottom β€” and it's the exact place most bowlers quit, because the scores are saying one thing while the work is saying another.

Then the climb. That's not talent showing up. That's commitment to the training converting.

And here's the part nobody talks about: eventually the climb flattens too. The new skill becomes the comfortable skill. They're back to practicing again and not seeing the growth they were experiencing.

Which brings a decision β€” is this good enough to reach the goal they named out loud? Or is it time to tear it down and build again?

That decision is the whole game. At every level of it.

Sacrifice the short to gain dividends in the long.

πŸ’¬ Where is your bowler right now β€” the dip, the climb, or the plateau?

πŸ“£ Coaches and Program Directors, this one is for you.

Here's what you need to know about the mental gameβ€”it's not feel-good affirmations. It's management.

Jody Haslam, USBC Silver Level Coach, Owner of Black Belt Bowling Academy, and Youth Director at Murfreesboro Strike & Spare lanes not only supported recruiting players for our workshop in June but attended as a participant right alongside his players. He walked away with this insight: "Everything I have heard is nothing but positive. The big takeaway for me was that we have to control the conversations that go in our mind and heart. If not, the conversation might not be to our advantage. It is an intentional process. It is more than positive affirmation."

That's it. That's the work.

Your bowlers are already having conversations with themselvesβ€”in the pressure frames, when things don't go as planned, when the pressure is loud. Those conversations are either supporting their performance or undermining it. And that's not something that happens to them. It's something they can manage.

The difference between a bowler who's mentally trained and one who isn't isn't belief. It's strategy. It's the ability to recognize what story they're telling themselves and intentionally choose a different one.

When you bring this work into your program, you're not adding another motivational speech. You're giving your bowlers a skill. One they can use on the lanes and off them.

Jody brought us to Murfreesboro because he knew his players and families deserved that.

What would change in your program if your bowlers had this skill?

Landmine rotations are one of my favorite off-lane exercises, and it is not close.

Bowling is a rotational sport. Your power starts at the ground, moves through your hips, and finishes at your fingers. If that chain is untrained, one of two things is happening. You are leaving ability on the table, or you are asking your body to absorb the load it was never prepared for.

Training does not always have to happen on the lanes. What you do off them is not extra credit. It is part of the job.

Attention can be paid, given, or stolen.
Read that again.
Attention can be
paid,
given,
or stolen.

Because it's true for your bowler. And honestly?
It's true for you too.

Your bowler can choose where their attention goes during competition β€” to their routine, to breath, to what's in their control. That's attention being paid. That's intentional, grounded, powerful.

Or they can let it get given away β€” to the lanes around them, to the score, to the pressure of the moment, to what they think they're supposed to be feeling. We see this all the time. They're not in control anymore. Their attention is just... gone.

Or it gets stolen by self-doubt, by perfectionism, by the voice that says they're not enough. And they don't even realize it's happening until the frame is over.

Here's what we're building at Mindset Gear: bowlers who know the difference. Who understand that their attention is theirs to direct. Who can feel the pressure and still choose where they focus.

But that doesn't happen in a vacuum. It happens when the people around them β€” you, their coaches, their teammates β€” are also paying their attention. Showing up with intention. Choosing what they focus on with your bowler, instead of letting anxiety or worry steal the moment.

That's the system shift. That's what changes everything.

Where is your attention today? πŸ’œ
