Understanding Intellectual Disability in Ages Birth–3

Intellectual disability in young children affects how they learn, reason, and reach developmental milestones. Signs can include delays in sitting, crawling, or walking; trouble with problem-solving; or difficulty learning new words or following simple directions. These children may also need more time to develop self-help skills like feeding or dressing.

Early identification is essential. With support, children with intellectual disabilities can learn, grow, and make meaningful progress at their own pace. Parents play a vital role by providing consistent routines, encouragement, and engaging play.

Early On can help by offering services that meet your child where they are and help them reach their full potential.

Understanding Developmental Disabilities in Ages Birth–3

Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions that cause delays in physical, learning, language, or behavior skills. In children from birth to age 3, signs may include difficulty with motor skills like crawling or walking, limited communication, trouble following simple directions, or a delay in social engagement like making eye contact or responding to their name.

Each child develops at their own pace, but consistent concerns across multiple areas of development may indicate the need for further support. Early identification doesn’t mean a child won’t thrive—it means they can receive services and guidance that help them build essential skills early on.

Parents and caregivers are often the first to notice when something feels off. Trust those instincts and reach out to programs like Early On for evaluation and support.
