Alliance Francaise de Charleston

We are a non-profit organization promoting French language and culture throughout the lowcountry of South Carolina. We welcome all interested in learning or improving French and looking to enjoy French culture in our beautiful region.

Luc Chasleries, President Pat Caldwell,Vice President Tony Islan, Secretary Ken Cunha, Treasurer

The Alliance Française was first established in Paris in 1883 with the aim of promoting French language and culture around the world. The Federation of Alliances Françaises in the United States was founded on March 4, 1902. One of 1,135 chapters in 138 countries, the Alliance Française de Charleston was founded in 1960. Its 300+ members represent the mingling of two groups: a French community seeking to stay connected to their French heritage and an American community interested in experiencing French culture. The Alliance sponsors annual celebrations such as the Beaujolais dinner in November and Bastille Day in July, and offers French language instruction, get-togethers featuring regional French foods, cooking classes, a French book club, French film club, petanque games (similar to bocce but with metal boules), a knitting club, and a bridge club. The chapter also meets and entertains visitors from France and assists members in planning their travels to France. Membership is open to the community, and knowledge of the French language is not required.

Mission: Raison d’Etre 1. The purpose of the Alliance Française is to encourage interest in the French language as well as Francophone culture and history, and to promote continued exchange, mutual understanding, and a growing friendship between American and Francophone peoples. 2. The Alliance Française de Charleston is affiliated with the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA. http://www.afusa.org/ 3. The Alliance Française is a non-profit, non-political, non-denominational organization open to members of the community who are interested in enjoying the opportunities provided by our association for these purposes. 4. Knowledge of the French language is not required. We have interesting programs which appeal to adults and students, such as lectures, concerts, exhibitions and celebrations of French events. We also greet and entertain certain visitors from France. 5. The Alliance Française de Charleston: - Helps its members plan their trips to France through the media offered by the Federation. - Welcomes French visitors and help them find their way through the local community. = Helps promote a close relationship between France and the United States. 6. Through our membership, we can provide help to anyone who wishes to improve his/her knowledge of the French language as it applies to travel, business or translation of documents.

What is La Chandeleur?
La Chandeleur (Candlemas or Crêpe Day) is celebrated 40 days after Christmas Day in France, on February 2, which, this year, is the day of the Super Bowl! That is the reason we decided to have our Crêpes Party on February 1st.
The origins of the celebration date from ancient times, but over the centuries many French regions have created their own traditions to ward off evil spirits, or guarantee prosperity for the coming year.

Members and guests will enjoy appetizers, dinner crepes and dessert crepes. Wine, beer, cidre, Perrier and soda will be sold by the glass as at our other events. $20 for AF members and $25 for guests.

We celebrated la Fête des Rois at our Jeunes Professionnels event last night and crowned a new queen!
If you couldn't make it last night, we look forward to seeing you at a future Meetup.
