ICE hace desaparecer de su localizador a miles de arrestados en su custodia con órdenes definitivas de expulsión.

El Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) ha dejado de revelar públicamente dónde retiene a miles de arrestados sujetos a órdenes de deportación definitivas.

Se trata de una medida no anunciada que ha dificultado mucho más que los abogados y los familiares los encuentren, según funcionarios actuales y anteriores familiarizados con la práctica.

Esta modificación pone de manifiesto la mano dura de la política migratoria del presidente Donald Trump, ya que dificulta enormemente el rastreo de miles de detenidos y les impide potencialmente ejercer todas sus opciones legales.

Según abogados de inmigración, esta práctica, que se aplica a los detenidos que han recibido órdenes definitivas de expulsión de un tribunal de inmigración, podría acelerar las deportaciones al dificultar la presentación de recursos legales de última hora.

Casi 16,000 personas arrestadas e ingresadas en centros de detención del ICE en julio fueron objeto de órdenes definitivas de expulsión, lo que representa más de un tercio del total de detenciones, según datos del ICE obtenidos por el Proyecto de Datos de Deportación, con sede en UC Berkeley y UCLA.

Berkeley County’s deeply dangerous relationship with ICE has been critiqued by many. It is endangering communities, creating a high level of mistrust between the public and police officers, and taking officers away from addressing actual crime. It ultimately leads to families being torn apart.

What people need to realize is that these policies do not only affect undocumented immigrant populations. Even if this were the only group targeted, this would still be a deeply misplaced and detrimental policy by Berkeley County. However, the reality is that working with ICE specifically also affects U.S. citizens and legal residents who belong to minority and immigrant communities.

ICE has now largely shifted to working with traffic stops and pulling drivers over. Of course, one of the main criteria for doing this is targeting those who appear to be immigrants, which disproportionately affects Latino and Black communities. At a minimum, this means minorities are going to be harassed more by officers. At worst, it could lead to severe issues, as ICE is largely run by untrained and unprofessional individuals. Someone who does not have their driver’s license with them, or perhaps does not feel they need to provide it at an ICE checkpoint, could end up detained.

We have already heard numerous stories of U.S. citizens and legal residents being picked up by mistake or through sheer incompetence by ICE. In a few cases, U.S. citizens have even been deported. It is a blatant form of racial profiling occurring in places like Berkeley County, making certain communities feel unwanted and targeted. This is yet another example of how Berkeley County and other local jurisdictions, including the Charleston and Dorchester County Sheriff's Offices, are bowing down to a fascist regime and destroying community trust in the process.
