Labor of Love Day was a busy one! 💛

Students donated hygiene supplies, made blankets, donated bedding, pillows, and partnered with the Sleep in Heavenly Peace Kanawha County Chapter to help build 10 beds for children in our community!

We love seeing our students put service into action and use their time, teamwork, and compassion to make a meaningful difference. This is occupational therapy at its core: supporting participation, dignity, comfort, and quality of life in the communities we serve.

In true OT fashion, we couldn’t just make blankets… we had to complete a full activity analysis too. 😂💛

Our MSOT students created blankets for Sleep in Heavenly Peace while breaking down the task through the OT lens, including the materials, steps, motor skills, process skills, safety considerations, environmental demands, and ways the activity could be adapted.

Service + activity analysis = a pretty perfect OT combination. 💛

Our students definitely know how to balance hard work, professionalism, and a little silliness along the way. We wouldn’t have it any other way! 💛

Occupational Therapy + Breast Health

Occupational therapy practitioners can support individuals before, during, and after breast cancer treatment by addressing:

-Shoulder and upper-extremity mobility
-Lymphedema risk reduction and management
-Scar and soft-tissue mobility
-Dressing, bathing, grooming, and other daily activities
-Cancer-related fatigue and energy conservation
-“Chemo brain,” memory, attention, and daily routines
-Pain, weakness, neuropathy, and sensory changes
-Returning to home, work, caregiving, and meaningful activities
-Exercise, pacing, and safe return to activity
-Compression garment education and self-management strategies
-Body image, confidence, intimacy, and psychosocial well-being

Helping people get back to the occupations that make life feel like life

Breast cancer treatment affects much more than the breast. OT looks at the whole person and helps individuals return to living, not simply recovering. 💗
