New Faculty Assignments in The Citadel School of Engineering! 🏗️

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Timothy Wood, P.E., who has been appointed Department Head of the Emmett Davis Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering, and Dr. William J. Davis, Ph.D., P.E. (A.L.), who has been appointed Interim Dean of The Citadel School of Engineering.

Dr. Wood is an award-winning educator whose expertise spans engineering mechanics, geotechnical engineering, and structural research. You've probably seen Dr. Wood in the classroom teaching courses in statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, professional licensure, and geotechnical engineering. Dr. Wood encourages students through his enthusiasm for engineering mechanics and self-directed, lifelong learning. His Wood’s technical research focuses on structural evaluation of buried bridges and culverts. A registered Professional Engineer in South Carolina, he earned his B.S. in Engineering Physics from Texas Tech University before completing his M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering.

Dr. Davis is a dedicated educator and researcher committed to student success through hands-on learning and career development. He teaches courses in land surveying, geographic information systems, transportation engineering, engineering management, and capstone design. With expertise in transportation engineering, surveying, and infrastructure resilience, he has led nationally recognized educational initiatives and earned civil engineering degrees from The University of Alabama, Auburn University, and Georgia Tech.

Congratulations to both Dr. Wood and Dr. Davis as they begin these new leadership roles!

Our Seniors in CIVL and CONE completed their last academic activity on Tuesday evening by presenting their 90% Completion Designs for an eVTOL training and repair hub in the Greenville Downtown Airport in Greenville, SC. Congratulations to all the seniors, but particularly teams "Aero Build Solutions" and "Lumora Engineering and Design" who won the Best Senior Presentation Award. Thank you to all of our Capstone Panelists for their oversight and feedback for our students!

On Friday, April 17th, Dr. Ronald W. Welch, P.E., and six cadets, from freshmen to seniors, traveled out to a local site in Mount Pleasant to rebuild the ASCE Timber-Strong Competition building! In the future, they hope that this structure will act as a playhouse for the local kids.

Junior Construction Engineering major, Taylor Kesler, had this to say regarding the trip: "It meant a lot to give back to the community and be part of something bigger than myself. Dr. Welch is one the most dedicated, impactful, and involved professors that I've had the pleasure of learning from while I've been at The Citadel. He'll be missed, but his influence will stray with us long after he has retired!"

Opportunities like this highlight how hands-on Service Learning experiences help shape future engineering leaders while reflecting the core values and character of The Citadel cadets.

For their end of semester project, students in Dr. Laughton's CIVL 101: Engineering Drawing course designed and 3D printed their own custom mini bridges. Wish them luck as they take their final exam today!

Day Two of the 2026 Carolina Symposium was filled with hours of fun! From Mead Paper presentations, to 3D Bridge, all the way to Quiz Bowl, our cadets showed up & showed out! 📄

Not only did all of our teams do an amazing job presenting on each competition they were participating in, but our Surveying Team placed 2nd in the competition! 🏆

Along with this, senior Davis Holt placed 1st in 3D Bridge and won the sub-awards of "Highest Structural Efficiency" and "Fastest Assembly Time". Great job, Davis! 👏 🌉

At the end of the Symposium, The Citadel was also awarded the Dr. David M. Bayer Sportsmanship award! Named in honor of Charlotte’s professor emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Dr. David M. Bayer, the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award is presented each year to the team that most embodies camaraderie and compassion to the other teams at the Symposium. 💙

Way to go, ASCE Student Chapter, the department is so proud of all of your hard work & accomplishments this year! Time to start planning for 2027! 🦖 🦕

Our cadets made us proud in both the race, the competition, and the competition! Of course, they had to show out in their themed Cap-Dog shirts, designed by senior Zander Murray, just for this year's competition! At the end of the week, Cadet Murray took home the first place trophy for the T-Shirt Design Competition! Congrats, Zander, we're so proud of you! 🏆
