Often times, what’s going on in our minds can affect what’s going on with our bodies.

CCSD board member and founder of Voices United, Erica Cokley talked with us here at WCIV | ABC News 4 about her upcoming event: Kicking the Stigma: Mental Health Awareness Fair and Kickball Game.

It’s next Saturday, May 15th from 12-4 p.m. in Summerville.

Take a listen...

The Be SMART program helps parents and other adults take responsible actions that can prevent child gun deaths and injuries. We will discuss safe firearm storage and child gun death prevention, as well as the role of guns in su***de, modeling responsible behavior around guns, and tips for how to talk to other adults about fi****ms in homes that children visit.
We welcome all who are interested in learning more about the Be SMART message. You'll learn how to bring Be SMART to your area, how to volunteer with us, and more!

Mental Health Awareness Month was first celebrated in 1949. It was commemorated by the Mental Health America organization, which was then known as the National Committee for Mental Hygiene and then later as the National Mental Health Association before it got its current name. The association was founded by Clifford Whittingham Beers. Beers, who was born in 1876 in Connecticut, was one of five children in his family who all suffered from mental illness and psychological distress. All of them also went on to spend time at mental institutions and it was from his hospital admittance that he discovered that the mental health field had a notorious reputation for malpractice, maltreatment, and immense bias.

Beers went on to author “A Mind That Found Itself”, which is a bestseller even today. Gaining popularity and support from medical professionals, Beers founded the National Committee for Mental Hygiene. Beers and his colleagues at the association wanted to find ways to make sure that mental health patients not only received the right care but also did not feel alone in their fight against mental diseases.

April is Autism Awareness Month!! To kick it off, here are a few facts regarding Autism.

❤️Autism affects 1 in 54 children.
🧡Autism is diagnosed four times more often in boys than girls.
💛 Autism greatly varies from person to person (no two people with autism are alike).
💚Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder, yet most underfunded
💙Children with autism do progress- early intervention is key
💜 There is no "cure" for Autism, however Autism is treatable. It is not a hopeless condition.

People cross our paths for a reason.

Each one of my children taught me something different, even more about myself.

To those who have supported me.. perhaps
We met at different times and places, for different reasons.. perhaps never meeting at all..
However we all share a common goal.
Each of you inspired me in a different way.. and it guided me to exactly where it seems I have always needed to be.
I remember saying that if I was ever given the platform, how I would utilize it to the best of my ability..
to use my VOICE for those not seen, heard, strong enough, willing enough, ..
I knew that with foundation and empowerment through understanding- we could break the generational cycles that have plagued the black community, broken women, and allowed children to fall between the cracks of society.

Since I wasn’t given a platform- and I didn’t care for the way some of them operated..
🗣 I created my own!!!
After my brother was killed..
I knew I had to find a way..
Not just for my kids, but for my 7 nieces and nephews I may never see.. and the kids that go unloved!!!!

WE ALL HAVE A RIGHT TO

Verbally express
Our
Input
Concerning
Everything
We have a VOICE.. and should be able to use it..

Especially when it comes to our own well being 🙏🏼👏🏽💪🏽

Our mission is to build empowerment through awareness by partnership and collaboration!!
Voices United.
Empowerment through awareness.

I have 3 black children to leave

I love each one of you!
And I’m blessed beyond measures that you accepted me and decided to be here with me!!
