Bartolomeo Cristofori of Italy is credited with inventing the piano. He was a harpsichord maker who was fed up with the inability of musicians to control the volume of the harsichord--so he came up with his own design! Here is a picture of one of Cristofori's earliest-known pianos, dating from 1720!
