Light on the Hill Society Scholarship There was no better way to honor that journey than to support the educational pursuits of those for whom they paved the way.

A tribute to Carolina’s earliest graduates who seized the opportunity to become Tar Heels, an option that was unavailable to them prior to the 1950s, this scholarship was created as a vehicle to recognize the perseverance of those pioneers. iative was created as a vehicle to recognize the perseverance of those pioneers. Supported by Carolina Alumni, formerly the UNC General Alumni Association (GAA), and administered by the Light on the Hill Society Advisory Board, the program has awarded 122 scholarships: 86 Light on the Hill Society scholars, 28 Peppers scholars, three High Undergraduate scholars, one High Graduate scholar and four Theta Omicron Foundation Achievement Award recipients.

This week on Meet the Scholars meet Light on the Hill Scholar Sydney Buck! Sydney is from Jamestown, North Carolina. She us majoring in Political Science and Public Policy with a minor in Social and Economic Justice. Her ultimate goal is to attend law school with hopes to pursue a career defending racial minorities in low-income communities. During high school, she started a nonprofit organization to help support her local elementary schools. She lead her senior class as their president as well as a senior advisor for the Red Cross club. Professionally, she was a page for North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and volunteered at local organizations that seek to correct food inequality. Here at UNC, she has joined various clubs like Women in National Security and Black Student Movement as she serves on the First-Year Class Council. She is also a Student Office Assistant for the UNC football program which has grown her love for sports. She looks forward to becoming involved more in campus life ranging from student organizations to going to all UNC home games.
